Job Summary/Basic Function

The Treasury Accountant plays a key role in safeguarding the university's cash assets through accurate and timely cash reconciliation, analysis, and collaboration. This position is responsible for reconciling complex cash activity, analyzing large data sets, and ensuring accounting transactions are complete, accurate, and compliant with university policies and audit requirements.

The Treasury Senior Accountant analyzes complex financial reports and records and makes recommendations based on analysis and status of reserves, assets, and expenditures. They oversee and manage treasury systems related to cash, debt, and investments, facilitating compliance with state and federal regulations and policies. Both positions partner closely with internal treasury staff, University Financial Services (UFS) departments, and campus stakeholders to resolve outstanding items, improve business processes, and support treasury operations. These roles also contribute to treasury initiatives, including implementation of cash management solutions and continuous process improvements.

Department Overview

Treasury and Real Estate department is part of University Financial Services (UFS) and supports the University’s Academic Mission by providing daily cash and banking services, managing debt and investment portfolios, coordinating financing and debt issuance for approved campus projects, and providing business case analysis and advising to campus departments. This position may offer hybrid and flexible scheduling options after a 90-day training period, subject to supervisor approval.

Essential Functions

  • Treasury Accountant:

    • Perform complex cash reconciliations by analyzing large data sets, researching discrepancies, and ensuring accurate accounting treatment in compliance with university policies, internal controls, and audit requirements.
    • Prepare and analyze journal entries, reconciliations, work papers, account analyses, financial records, and supporting documentation for monthly, quarterly, and fiscal year-end close.
    • Analyze financial activity and prepare reports and financial statement analyses to identify trends, resolve issues, and support sound financial decision-making.
    • Absorb treasury operations, including customer service requests, bank reporting, unclaimed property, compliance activities, and daily treasury functions.
    • Collaborate with treasury staff, University Financial Services partners, and campus departments to resolve outstanding items, improve accounting processes, and strengthen internal controls.
    • Support treasury initiatives, including system implementations, process improvements, and effective use of ERP systems and financial reporting tools.
    • Provide guidance to campus partners on cash handling procedures, accounting practices, and reconciliation processes to promote compliance and operational effectiveness.
    • Prepare complex reports, schedules, and special studies requiring a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures for both internal and external financial reporting requirements and year-end audit.
    • Interpret, apply, and explain complex laws, codes, regulations, or ordinances.
    • Research and analyze data for accuracy, trends, and variances to ensure appropriate accounting procedures have been followed for compliance with federal and state laws and regulations and University policy.
    • Reconcile account balances and external statements, maintain general ledger, and prepare month-end close procedure.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Treasury Senior Accountant:

    • Own the end-to-end processing of treasury-related journal entries—encompassing routine monthly postings and ad-hoc adjustments for cash, debt, and investment activities, ensuring accurate general ledger representation for reporting periods.
    • Oversee cash account reconciliations by performing regular reviews and serving as the secondary lead for cash reconciliation tasks when the primary owner is unavailable.
    • Assist in the production of the annual report, develop and provide necessary documentation for financial statement note disclosures, generate customized reports regarding investments and debt on an ad hoc basis, analyze monthly investment statements and compile internal audit workpapers every quarter, assemble quarterly documentation to support the Statement of Cash Flows, perform quarterly reporting on net asset splits for both investments and bonds, conduct thorough evaluations of income statements and balance sheets, and process complex reports, schedules, and special studies requiring a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures for both internal and external financial reporting requirements and year-end audit.
    • Manage and improve cash, investment, debt, and reporting processes to ensure compliance with GASB and institutional standards, support audit requests, and provide documentation for internal and external stakeholders, and routinely make decisions regarding proper processing, booking, and reporting of transactions related to the University.
    • May prepare and submit federal and state biweekly, monthly, quarterly, and year-end tax reports, make tax deposits weekly, monthly, and quarterly for the federal and state taxes, and coordinate the development and implementation of policies and procedures for internal controls and business affairs to achieve the overall goals of the department.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Treasury Accountant:

    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent plus two years of experience.
    • Proven experience in treasury, banking, or cash management.
    • Experience with complex ERP systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
    • Experience supporting process improvements, financial systems, or technology implementations is preferred.
    • Experience preparing financial and/or auditor statements, schedules, and reports.
    • Experience interpreting, applying, and explaining complex laws, codes, regulations, or ordinances.
    • Experience in effective data presentation using Excel and/or other spreadsheet computer applications.
    • Demonstrated experience in financial analysis.
  • Treasury Senior Accountant:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Accounting, Business, or related field.
    • Professional accounting experience, preferably in treasury, banking, or cash management.
    • CPA or progress toward certification.
    • Experience with financial reporting, audits, and note disclosures.
    • Experience performing large-scale, complex account reconciliations and financial analysis.
    • Experience with complex ERP systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
    • Experience supporting process improvements, financial systems, or technology implementations is preferred.
    • Past supervisory experience.
    • Experience in applying and writing policies and procedures.

Salary and Benefits

Treasury Accountant: Salary starting at $60,673.60 annually and is commensurate with experience.

Treasury Senior Accountant: Salary starting at $73,548.80 annually and is commensurate with experience.
