Traveling Registered Nurse

About the Role

The Traveling Registered Nurse is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. This role involves extensive travel to various locations as needed, with assignments typically lasting 8-13 weeks. While not on assignment, the Traveling Registered Nurse may work in their home program. The role includes routine and emergency patient assessments, education for patients and caregivers, and care coordination to ensure patient and family needs are met.

Responsibilities

• Travels to assigned programs based on need, such as vacant positions, increased census, or additional staffing requirements. Assignments may vary from 8-13 weeks.
• Admits patients and performs routine and emergency assessments as indicated by departmental policy.
• May act as a preceptor to onboard and train new team members in assigned programs.
• Meets productivity standards set by the assigned program and is available for visits throughout the regular workday.
• Coordinates clinical care and disciplines (e.g., Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, MSW, Home Health Aide) as indicated by the Plan of Care through case management.
• Ensures documentation at the bedside by recording observations, treatments, and pertinent information.
• Communicates with the Hospice Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), Medical Director, and Attending Physician regarding symptom alleviation and monitors responses to implemented measures.
• Prevents unwarranted hospitalizations by meeting patient and family needs in the home.
• Collaborates with the IDT to meet patient needs for clinical and psycho-social interventions and coordinates hospice/home health care.
• Develops and updates care plans following each Plan of Care (POC) change and ensures updates from psycho-social staff.
• Educates patients and caregivers on patient care, disease processes, symptom control, wound care, and IV therapy.
• Completes referral and admission assessments as requested.
• Supervises care provided by Hospice and Home Health Licensed Practical Nurses and Aides.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Associate or Bachelor's degree in Nursing required.
• Minimum of one (1) year of nursing practice or equivalent experience preferred.
• Home Health, hospice, oncology, and/or long-term care experience preferred.
• Active and unencumbered Registered Nurse license in state(s) of employment; ability to obtain nursing license in states where delivering care is required.
• State-Specific Requirements:
  • Louisiana: Two (2) years full-time experience as a Registered Nurse; or two (2) years full-time clinical experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse in hospice.
  • Mississippi: One (1) year full-time experience as a Registered Nurse or three (3) years full-time continuous employment as a Licensed Practical Nurse immediately preceding Registered Nurse licensure.

Skills

• Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
• Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English.
• Articulates and embraces the integrated healthcare at home philosophy.
• Working knowledge of nursing principles, standards, and applications.
• Knowledge of medical devices, ambulatory aides, assistive and resistive devices, and training.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Ability to work with all types and levels of patients.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
• Must be able to travel extensively.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The demands of this role necessitate standing, walking, and manual dexterity. Adaptations can be made to accommodate disabilities. Regular lifting and moving of objects up to 50 pounds is required. Visual acuity includes close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and conditions typical to the healthcare field is expected. Routine use of standard medical equipment and tools associated with clinical care is essential.

Pay

Estimated salary range: $50.00 - $60.00 per hour. Actual salary will vary by geographic location and experience.
