About the Role
This is the entry, first working, and journey level of professional surveying work at Caltrans. Transportation Surveyors must have knowledge, experience, and familiarity with a wide variety of professional field and office land surveying equipment, tools, and procedures to perform professional land surveying work in either an office and/or field setting.
A Transportation Surveyor will work either (1) under the direction of a licensed land surveyor (Range A through C) or (2) at the licensed professional level in a responsible charge capacity (including signing and sealing documents) (Range D).
Transportation Surveyors work under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor or Transportation Surveyor Party Chief but may also take direction from a lead worker. Travel may be required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
Responsibilities

- Operate professional field and office land surveying equipment and tools.
- Work under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor or Transportation Surveyor Party Chief.
- Take direction from a lead worker as needed.
- Travel to various locations as required for job duties.
Requirements
- Knowledge, experience, and familiarity with professional land surveying equipment, tools, and procedures.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work under the direction of a licensed land surveyor or in a responsible charge capacity at the licensed professional level (Range D).
Pay
$6,332.00 - $12,152.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
Schedule
Permanent, Full Time. Hybrid work schedule available at the discretion of the Department.
