Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief - South Travis Maintenance Office (Austin District)

About the role

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis and contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
• Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
• Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
• Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
• Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
• Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
• Operates light and heavy equipment.
• Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
• Performs maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
• Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent in general education.
• 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance-related work (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with "N" Endorsement.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.
• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
• Subject to noise.
• Required to wear protective gear: respirator, hard hat, or other device.
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Reaching: extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Walking: moving on foot to accomplish tasks; long distance/from one work site to another.
• Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
• Hearing: perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
• Close Visual Acuity: work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
• Visual Acuity: determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures.

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

Pay

$54,278 - $87,046/yearly.
