About the role
This position is responsible for conducting classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training for various types of drivers employed by Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
Responsibilities
- Conducts classroom instruction and practical skills assessments for behind-the-wheel training for new and existing school bus drivers and other FCPS commercial-class vehicle drivers.
- Develops training curriculum and instructional materials, including presentations, videos, and training documents.
- Assists in recommending areas of improvement in training curriculum and training delivery methods.
- Trains drivers on the operation of school buses, including special needs student transportation requirements.
- Administers testing as a proctor for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle's Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).
- Provides on-the-job training sessions, evaluates driver learning ability, and recommends certification.
- Documents hiring recommendations and observes, evaluates, and records bus driver performance.
- Performs on-site inspections and investigations of FCPS vehicle crashes, documents incidents, and provides reports to management.
- Trains personnel in other FCPS offices, local school districts, and Fairfax County personnel for initial certification.
- Supports driver trainees and office staff with basic computer technology, timesheets, remote learning, and email access.
- Serves as a liaison with state and county entities related to licensing requirements, third-party tester requirements, and obtaining permits.
- Drives buses during training and may drive on regular or reduced routes as needed.
- Completes required transportation training and recertification activities.
Requirements
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
- One (1) year of experience in school bus driving with no preventable crashes.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certification within 90 days of employment and maintain recertification in accordance to prescribed timelines.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations related to school bus driver and other commercial class vehicle drivers licensing and certification.
- Knowledge of guidelines and best practices in the safe transportation of students in a K-12 environment, to include special equipment needs.
- Knowledge of the local street and road system of Fairfax County and neighboring counties.
- Proficiency in the use of technology.
- Ability to present information in a classroom training environment and to perform behind-the-wheel training activities.
- Ability to make concise objective judgments and analysis of individual strengths and weaknesses.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team to ensure a program meets its goals.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Qualifications
- Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Commercial driver's license CDL-B with P and S (passenger and school bus) endorsements with air brakes.
- Certification in emergency first aid, CPR, and the use of an automated external defibrillator.
- Satisfactory pre-employment physical examination and completed School Bus Driver's Physician Certificate.
- Completed or shall complete within one (1) year of employment, the "New Director/Supervisor" class conducted by the Virginia Department of Education.
