Bus Driver Instructor

About the role

The Bus Driver Instructor is assigned to a route and is responsible for classroom instruction, behind‑the‑wheel instruction, retraining instruction, transport‑van training, third‑party CDL testing when necessary, and other duties as assigned. The Instructor assists the Transportation Area Supervisor in charge of training and performs both bus operation and field observation of school bus drivers and attendants.

Responsibilities

• Instruct all areas of training and staff education provided by the Division of Transportation Training Office.
• Assist in the preparation of materials for all training sessions.
• Perform field observations and ride‑along observations of bus drivers.
• Assist supervisors in daily school bus operations, including safe transportation of students, maintaining effective control of students, and helping bus attendants board and secure students.
• Support the Transportation In‑Service Meeting twice yearly, open‑house recruitment events, and public‑relations events.
• Provide third‑party testing for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED (required).
• Four (4) years of driving experience.
• Minimum age of 20.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsement for at least 2 years, issued in the State of Virginia (VA Code Section 46.2‑341.4).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to obtain a completed physician’s certificate (School Bus Driver’s Application for Physician Certificate, form EB.001) with required controlled‑substance testing, annual physicals, and random drug/alcohol tests as mandated by the Virginia Board of Education and Loudoun County Public Schools.
• Knowledge of school bus operations, traffic and highway safety rules, local street and road systems, and basic mechanical principles of motor‑vehicle operation.
• Advanced verbal and written fluency in English.
• Effective communication with students, staff, and parents; ability to follow written and oral instructions and operate a two‑way radio.
• Ability to obtain National Safety Council First Aid and CPR Instructor certifications within six months of hire.
• Ability to complete DOT‑mandated Drug and Alcohol Suspicion Training for Supervisors within the first 90 days of employment.
• Obtain certification as a Virginia School Bus Driver Trainer and DMV Third‑Party Tester as required.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly talk and convey detailed spoken instructions loudly, quickly, or accurately.
• Normal cognitive abilities to learn, recall, and apply policies and practices.
• Frequent sitting or remaining stationary for long periods.
• Occasional exertion of up to 50 lb of force and frequent negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.

Essential Personnel

Employees in this position are designated essential personnel and must report for work during delays or emergency situations. The supervisor will provide advance notice of required reporting via in‑person communication or email.

Pay

Salary Range: $31.16 – $40.13 per hour (Universal/Scale B.1 – Level 9). FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt. Work Schedule: 12 months, 254 days, 8 hours per day. Remote work eligible: No. Union designation: Non‑certified.
