Responsibilities

• Road and Surface/Roadside Maintenance
  • Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces.
  • Maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair.
  • Maintains roadsides, installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt-A-Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates tractor mowers and small rollers for maintaining roadways.
  • Performs traffic control set-ups in high-volume traffic, ensuring compliance with the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual for safety.
  • Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, and brush on roadsides—planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming, and removal. Includes chipping tree limbs and stump removal/grinding.
• Snow & Ice Maintenance
  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders, widens roadways after large snow accumulations, and removes snow from rights-of-way or yards.
  • Applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on highways under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; performs night or dawn patrols.
  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment—maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges, and sanders; cleans equipment post-storm.
  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and post-storm cleanup, including machine or hand sweeping on bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
  • Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.

Requirements

• A valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction.
• One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (e.g., roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience). OR successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) to substitute for one year of experience. Transcripts must be submitted for education to be considered.
• Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.

• This position is contingent upon:
  • Having a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Submitting to a Federal Department of Transportation pre-employment drug test (with negative results).
  • Being subject to future random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Registration in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Candidates made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher, and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. Candidates who previously passed the assessment may be exempt from re-testing.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous MnDOT experience working as a laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.

Pay

$25.19 - $31.60 / hourly; $52,597 - $65,981 / annually

Day shift, Monday - Friday
