Additional Benefits

  • Signed bonus of $3,000 for candidates remaining employed with the City as a Police Dispatcher for a minimum of 3 years, to be paid as follows: $1,000 at hiring; $1,000 after 1 year of service; $1,000 after 2 years of service.
  • Credit of $250 for purchase of initial set of uniforms.
  • Vacation credit commensurate with years of experience in the Dispatcher classification.
  • Sick leave credit to be used during the first 2 years of City service, depending upon years of service:
    • 40 hrs: 1-5 years exp.
    • 80 hrs: 5-10 years exp.
    • 120 hrs: More than 10 years exp.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receive emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public requesting police and local government service; determine nature and priority; dispatch units as necessary; and/or refer or transfer callers to ensure excellent customer service.
  • Maintain radio contact with all units on assignment.
  • Cookordinate emergency calls and relay information and assistance requests involving other law enforcement agencies.
  • Query information from law enforcement communication networks relating to wanted persons, criminal history, stolen property, and Department of Motor Vehicle information.
  • Query and enter stolen, stored, and repossessed vehicle information.
  • Perform a variety of records keeping duties related to the computer aided dispatch system.
  • Test and inspect equipment as required.
  • Testify in court as needed.
  • Prepare written responses or reports related to communication complaints, investigative follow-ups or police reports.
  • Write daily work progress reports when training a new Dispatcher.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, empathy, and excellent customer service in accordance with departmental policy and the community oriented policing concept.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of:
    • English grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation.
    • The geographic features of the City of Sacramento in detail.
    • Standard broadcasting procedures and rules.
    • Communicate clearly and precisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Understand and comply with oral and written directions.
    • Learn City street system and physical layout of Sacramento.
    • Learn standard broadcasting rules and procedures.
    • Work under pressure and exercise good judgement in emergency situations.
    • Learn to effectively and calmly communicate with and elicit information from upset victims and irate callers.
    • Exercise independent judgment and work with a minimum of supervision.
    • Learn to operate computer-aided dispatch and radio broadcasting equipment.
    • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
    • Operate office machines and equipment.
    • Type 30 net wpm.

SPECIAL NOTES

  • If considered for appointment, candidates must successfully pass a medical examination and psychological test.
  • If considered for appointment, candidates must successfully pass an extensive background investigation, which includes fingerprinting, drug use history, and a polygraph test.
  • Candidates must be prepared to work any shift during a 24-hour period and on holidays and weekends.

THE SELECTION PROCEDURE

    • a copy of your P.O.S.T. Certificate.

  • 2) Oral Interview Test: (Weighted 100%) Usually conducted two or more times per year in accordance with hiring needs. The oral interview test is administered by the Sacramento Police Department and will consist of job-related questions.
