Duties And Responsibilities
- Recommendation and verification of analysis methods appropriate for use in the section.
- Initiates validation of new procedures and processes.
- Oversees quality control and proficiency testing in the section.
- Identifies technical problems and notifies the Core Lab supervisor whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
- Training and competency:
- Identifies training needs and assures that each individual performing testing receives training and education appropriate for the section.
- Evaluates competency of all testing personnel in the section and assures that staff maintain competency to perform procedures accurately and proficiently.
- Participates in interview process for job applicants. Recommends employment or termination of personnel working in the section.
- Is responsible for section compliance with biosafety policies.
- Recommends the CAP proficiency testing surveys which commensurate with the services offered.
- Ensures an adequate inventory of blood products, reagents and supplies in the section, optimizing ordering patterns and utilization to maximize benefit of vendor contracts.
- Maintains a preventative maintenance schedule of transfusion service equipment, to ensure optimal performance.
- Insures section compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies.
- Prepares reports as needed to demonstrate performance monitors in the Transfusion Service for the UMMC Midtown Blood and Tissue Use Committee and quality indicators.
- Identifies opportunities for improvement in departmental activities or processes.
- Prepares reports as needed to demonstrate departmental performance.
- Accepts responsibility for other duties or projects as needed or assigned.
Education
- Has earned a bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.
- ASCP certification required.
- Specialist in Blood Bank preferred.
- PC literate, able to utilize word processing and basic computer programs.
Experience
- Has a minimum of 5 years of laboratory training or experience.
- At least 3 years in high complexity testing for the specialty of blood bank preferred.
