Transfer Admissions Counselor I - Mississippi State University

About the role

The Admission Counselor represents Mississippi State University to prospective students, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff. This position focuses on the recruitment of transfer students and involves extensive public relations responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Extensive travel for school visitations, individual counseling with students and parents, and follow-up correspondence.
  • Telephone marketing and public relations related to student recruitment.
  • Participate in the development of operating goals and objectives for the unit.
  • Recommend, implement, and administer methods and procedures to enhance operations.
  • Develop and execute effective recruitment strategies.
  • Conduct recruiting activities and follow-up with prospective students in an assigned territory.
  • Visit community colleges, college fairs, and student conferences to recruit students and provide information.
  • Prepare correspondence for prospective students and respond to email and telephone inquiries.
  • Represent Mississippi State University at conferences, meetings, and official functions.
  • Attend alumni meetings and assist as needed.
  • Assist with the campus visit program, on-campus events, and orientation.
  • Stay current on university programs and changes within academic schools and colleges.
  • Assist with publications released by Enrollment Services.
  • Contact alumni presidents and/or recruiting chairpersons within assigned territory.
  • Visit high schools as needed.
  • Maintain an updated list of outstanding juniors and seniors and keep in contact with them.
  • Work closely with community college officials in assigned territory to recruit prospective students.
  • Plan recruiting events with the Assistant Director in assigned territory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision

The Admission Counselor receives guidance from the Associate Director for Recruiting and provides indirect supervision to support staff and student workers.

Relationships

The Admission Counselor serves as a liaison between prospective students and Mississippi State University.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Working Conditions

  • Extensive travel required.
  • No heavy lifting; most work performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
  • Seasonal variance in work volume with predictable deadlines and priorities.
  • Occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
  • Job frequently requires standing, walking, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
