Trails Maintenance Leader-CDL (15078 Grade 16)

About the role

The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation Southern Region Parks Division seeks an experienced Trails Maintenance Leader - CDL to work within the Trails Program at the Bock Road Maintenance Facility in Fort Washington, Maryland. This position performs trail maintenance and renovation tasks in parks throughout the southern portion of Prince George’s County, including large equipment operation, mowing, pest scouting and control, and vegetation management. The role involves leadership, independent work assignments, and collaboration with a team.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and coordination of the Trails Team, including development and communication of work assignments.
• Perform skilled maintenance of grounds, including turfgrass management, disease scouting, weed and disease control, turfgrass striping, and minor tree limbing.
• Plan work, receive work orders, drawings, and plans; estimate and order supplies and materials for crew assignments.
• Set priorities for workers, ensure timely and accurate completion of assignments, and identify and correct problems.
• Conduct inspections of park property for safety purposes.
• Lead and direct workers to accomplish established work programs and correct problems.
• Oversee maintenance and renovation contractors, documenting contract compliance.
• Maintain, prepare, and initiate records; keep inventory and supply records.
• Participate in accident investigations and write reports for injuries and equipment damage.
• Submit routine and special reports related to facilities and programs.
• Collect and enter data into the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system and complete work order forms.
• Lead workers on landscaping, trails maintenance, and turf maintenance projects.
• Operate tractors, backhoes, and other medium to heavy equipment for difficult projects.
• Resolve customer complaints.
• Maintain trails and surrounding park property grounds according to established standards.
• Utilize a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to perform park maintenance tasks.
• Ensure staff use proper safety equipment and train reporting staff in proper methods and safety.
• Maintain accurate inventory for equipment, parks, and facilities.
• Perform snow removal and other weather-related duties.
• Lead and monitor Park/Facilities Maintenance Workers in day-to-day duties, including general park maintenance, program support, playgrounds, snow removal, athletic field and trails maintenance.
• Complete and submit work orders to the Park Manager daily.
• Utilize the EAM (work order tracking system) to book labor and provide necessary details.
• Clear brush, prune deadwood, and cut down small trees.

Requirements

• High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance, or park maintenance. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
• Valid driver’s license in accordance with State and Commission rules and regulations, free of restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit driving ability.
• Pass Commission medical examination.
• Depending on assignment, may require within 12 months of hire:
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in relevant categories.
  • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification.
  • National Playground Safety Institute certification.

Skills

• Knowledge of groundskeeping, trails and turf maintenance, landscaping, maintenance practices, products, and equipment.
• Basic automobile and equipment maintenance skills.
• Knowledge of park operations and maintenance, pesticide and fertilizer application, and safety techniques.
• Skill in assigning or reviewing tasks, setting pace, and performing group leader work.
• Ability to lead maintenance workers in various park or general maintenance activities and projects.
• Experience operating trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, forklifts, and other heavy equipment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office for administrative tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years of experience in the grounds maintenance industry with heavy equipment for maintenance and renovations.
• Three years of experience in the Trails or Grounds Management Industry.
• Strong work ethic with the ability to independently lead a team.
• Class A CDL to transport crew members and/or equipment.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–2:45 PM. Schedule may change based on program needs.
