About the role

This position is an entry level role that conducts specialized technical work in the inspection, installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic sign and marking devices. Work is performed with considerable independent judgement and is under the direction of the Foreman or higher-level Tech and is reviewed through periodic conferences and reports.

Responsibilities

  • Performs traffic sign and pavement marking work in accordance with federal (FHWA) and local (FDOT) specifications, including construction, inspection, and maintenance; uses retro reflectometer devices to assess reflectivity and ensure compliance.
  • Reads plans, sketches, or maps to determine appropriate placement of signs and pavement markings; assists Foreman with layout of pavement marking for new work.
  • Installs traffic signs, including sign fabrication, assembly, and installation; uses hand or power tools to install or remove signposts and signs.
  • Installs pavement markings such as cold plastic by hand or applicator, pre-formed heat-activated legends, and sidewalk/pedestrian markings using painting systems; installs raised pavement markers and assists with forklift operations for loading/unloading pavement marking materials.
  • Reviews existing pavement markings in the field and adjusts or installs new markings; assists with the operation of thermoplastic handliners and in the maintenance and repair of thermoplastic pavement marking equipment.
  • Responds to traffic sign complaints and conducts field assessments to implement appropriate temporary or permanent corrective actions, including necessary follow-up; inspects signs in assigned areas to identify maintenance or replacement needs.
  • Maintains an inventory of standard signs and posts on work trucks for emergency response and field repairs.
  • Implements appropriate Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) setups to ensure safe work zones, including construction signage, cones, and arrow boards.
  • Completes detailed field reports and service-related electronic documentation, including photos, time, materials, and location data, using industry-specific systems to track damaged, replaced, or newly installed devices.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Must obtain and maintain the State Maintenance of Traffic training within three (3) months of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain the appropriate valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the type of vehicle operated within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must obtain certification as a Level I Signs and Pavement Markings Technician by the International Municipal Signal Association within 12 months of hire.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work outside in adverse weather conditions.
  • Experience in basic construction and using hand/power tools.
  • Ability to work independently outside.
  • Ability to lift street signs to install in the ground and a maximum weight of 60 lbs.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and/or blueprints.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Basic computer skills to include utilizing word processing, spreadsheet and email software.
