Trade & Industry Teacher - Carpentry (High School)

This is a 195-day, 10-month Licensed Teacher position reporting to the School Principals for the 2026-2027 school year at ACHS - King Street Campus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
• Valid Virginia Department of Education License, or eligibility to obtain one, with a Trade & Industry endorsement.
• An endorsement in a specialized trade and industrial education area, granted to individuals who:
  • Have been recommended by an employing Virginia educational agency;
  • Hold a license or are certified as a professional practitioner in the endorsement area sought, if applicable, or can demonstrate competency in that area of trade and industrial education;
  • Provide evidence of at least two years or 4,000 clock hours of satisfactory occupational experience within the past five years in the teaching specialty for which they are seeking endorsement (candidates whose experience is older must complete a supervised technical update or a six-week internship);
  • Have completed professional studies requirements (human growth and development: three semester hours; curriculum and instructional procedures in career and technical education: three semester hours; and applications of instructional technology or classroom and behavior management: three semester hours).
• For initial licensure in Virginia, an industry certification credential in the endorsement area is required; if not yet attained, a provisional license may be issued upon request.

Responsibilities

• Adapts classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
• Administers developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
• Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, achievements, and methods for improvement.
• Assesses student progress towards objectives and goals to provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
• Collaborates with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives supporting the school improvement plan.
• Counsels students on performance improvement, health status, problem-solving techniques, and personal issues.
• Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and subject-specific assignments to provide an effective program addressing individual student requirements.
• Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to address the needs of individual students.
• Instructs students to improve their success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
• Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Monitors students in various educational environments (classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) to ensure safety and a positive learning environment.
• Participates in meetings to convey and gather information required to perform job functions.
• Prepares written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
• Reports incidents (fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety and adhere to policies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Pay

Step placement and salary for this position are determined by The ACPS Teachers and Other Licensed Staff Salary Scale.
