About the Role

To develop in each pupil an awareness and understanding of carpentry skills and knowledge applicable to business or public sector work. The role aims to instill safe working habits, the importance of continued education, and qualities such as reliability, competence, loyalty, and dependability.

Responsibilities

  • Teach carpentry skills and knowledge full-time to students in grades 9-12.
  • Develop lesson plans, maintain a plan book, and organize class time to accommodate preparation, instruction, shop work, and clean-up activities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of occupational materials, equipment, tools, and processes using standard or teacher-prepared models, mock-ups, sketches, and other instructional aids aligned with the carpentry competency-based task listing.
  • Instruct pupils in appropriate safety precautions and the safe operation of tools, machinery, and equipment.
  • Grade and monitor student progress using progress reports, report cards, and student competency lists.
  • Communicate with employers, parents, and school counselors regarding individual pupil progress.
  • Attend special education Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings where required.
  • Provide supervision and extra help to students as needed.
  • Attend meetings as required by the teacher contracts.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent-Director.

Requirements

  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain a Chapter 74 teaching license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Requirements to obtain the license:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Five years of full-time employment experience directly related to carpentry.
    • Passing score on each of the written and performance exams for carpentry.
    • Possession of a current MA Contractors Supervisor License.
    • Achieve a passing score on either Vocational Technical Literacy Skills or Communication and Literacy Skills test.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and independently with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the public.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable using computers and software.
  • Prior teaching experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • May require long periods of standing and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • May require operating hand tools and motor equipment.
  • May involve working in confined spaces with exposure to dust, smoke, fumes, and gases.

Schedule

Ten-month, school-year position (183 days).

Pay

Initial salary will be established by the Superintendent-Director in accordance with the Teachers’ Contract.

Benefits

Fringe benefits as outlined in the Teachers’ Contract.
