About the role

The instructional assistant supports student learning using Montessori materials and district models in small group and one-on-one instruction. Responsibilities include monitoring and overseeing student activities, providing instructional support, and assisting with clerical tasks.

Responsibilities

• Supports a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students.
• Makes sure students complete classroom assignments, homework, and projects in various subject areas.
• Monitors and reports on student performance and behavior.
• Assists with classroom activities such as preparing and setting up work areas, decorations, posters, and displays.
• Ensures the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures.
• Maintains classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly, and clean manner.
• Performs related duties as assigned by the administrator.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Experience working with Montessori programs preferred.
• Counseling and computer skills helpful.
• A strong desire to see students succeed.
• A sincere concern for youth and a strong work ethic.
• The ability to positively motivate students.

Essential Functions

• Assist in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students.
• Monitor and oversee student drills, practices, and assignments in various subjects.
• Provide instructional support to various teachers.
• Grade student tests and assignments and record grades.
• Maintain student records and files as assigned.
• Implement lesson plans and confer with teachers to meet student needs.
• Explain and ensure student understanding of classroom assignments and homework instructions.
• Observe and control student behavior according to approved procedures.
• Monitor students during outdoor and recess activities as required.
• Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned.
• Assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition.
• Assist students with spelling and writing exercises and assignments.
• Prepare and set up work areas, decorations, posters, and displays.
• Distribute and collect paper supplies and materials.
• Ensure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures.
• Maintain classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly, and clean manner.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions.
• Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
• Bend at the waist, kneel, or crouch.
• Close vision and ability to adjust focus.
• Lift, carry, and/or push students weighing 25 pounds or more in wheelchairs as assigned.
