About the role

Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s water distribution system. This position ensures the safe and efficient delivery of potable water to residents and businesses.

Responsibilities

• Operates, maintains, and repairs water distribution system components including pumps, valves, hydrants, meters, and mains.
• Monitors and adjusts system pressures and flows to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
• Performs routine inspections of water infrastructure to identify and address leaks, corrosion, or other issues.
• Installs, tests, and repairs water meters and backflow prevention devices.
• Responds to water system emergencies, including main breaks and service disruptions, to restore service promptly.
• Collects and analyzes water samples for quality testing in accordance with state and federal regulations.
• Maintains accurate records of system operations, maintenance activities, and water usage data.
• Assists in the planning and execution of water system improvements and capital projects.
• Operates and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles used in water distribution system work.
• Provides customer service by responding to inquiries, complaints, and requests related to water service.
• Participates in training and professional development to stay current with industry standards and best practices.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid Arizona Class D driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Certification as a Grade II Water Distribution Operator by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) within one year of hire.
• Minimum of two years of experience in water distribution system operations or a related field.
• Knowledge of water distribution system components, operations, and maintenance practices.
• Ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints, and technical manuals.
• Proficiency in using hand and power tools, as well as specialized equipment for water system maintenance.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects, working in confined spaces, and exposure to varying weather conditions.
• Availability for on-call duty and emergency response as required.

Schedule
