About the role
The City of Tolleson is seeking a Wastewater Operator I who will also serve as a Semi Truck Driver. This dual-role position is responsible for operating and maintaining the city’s wastewater treatment facilities and driving a semi truck for the transportation of wastewater-related materials.
Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor, and maintain wastewater treatment processes and equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Perform routine inspections, adjustments, and repairs on pumps, motors, valves, and other mechanical and electrical components of the wastewater system.
- Collect and analyze wastewater samples for laboratory testing to ensure water quality meets environmental regulations.
- Operate and drive a semi truck to transport biosolids, chemicals, and other materials related to wastewater operations.
- Load and unload materials safely, adhering to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and city safety protocols.
- Maintain accurate logs and records of wastewater operations, truck inspections, and material transport.
- Respond to emergency calls related to wastewater system failures or spills, including after-hours and weekend call-outs as required.
- Assist with the maintenance and cleaning of treatment plant facilities, including tanks, clarifiers, and lift stations.
- Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay current with industry standards and regulations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for operating a semi truck (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in wastewater treatment operations or a related field.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, equipment, and safety protocols.
- Ability to operate and maintain a semi truck and related equipment safely and efficiently.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical manuals, schematics, and regulatory guidelines.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks.
- Good physical condition, with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Grade I Wastewater Operator certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) within one (1) year of hire.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, and physical examination.

Schedule
