About the role

The City of Lynchburg is seeking a Driver/Operator for the Water Resources Department's Wastewater Treatment Plant. This position operates a variety of heavy motorized equipment to transport and dispose of wastewater solids.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a 5 or 6 axle, 75,000-pound road tractor dump trailer combination to transport and dispose of wastewater solids.
  • Operates a 3 or 4 axle 55,000-pound hooklift/rolloff truck to transport and dispose of wastewater solids.
  • Coordinates loads with solid waste management facility staff and WWTP staff to ensure timely transportation.
  • Unloads WWTP solids from vehicles at solid waste management facilities, washing excess material to prevent spillage.
  • Spots, connects, and disconnects trailers and canisters at the WWTP.
  • Maintains and performs minor PM and maintenance on trucks, canisters, and trailers.
  • Performs necessary VDOT equipment checks and keeps records such as manifests and DOT logs.
  • Operates backhoe or similar equipment, assists with snow removal, cleans trucks and equipment, and assists plant operations staff as needed.
  • Collects and handles samples from loads, operates WWTP equipment, and makes checks of plant equipment.
  • Responds to emergency calls, operates other equipment, and insures proper operation of plant equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains plant spaces, enters data into computer, and performs related tasks as required.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.
  • Valid Virginia Class "A" commercial license.
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record based on City criteria.
  • Completion of IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment.

  • Must successfully complete relevant background checks including pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
