About the role
Are you ready to operate critical systems that protect the environment and help keep our military community safe? The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator position with the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is a meaningful opportunity for someone who wants to protect public health as well as the environment. Within this role, you will operate important systems, monitor water quality, and ensure the plant runs safely each day. You will employ hands-on skills, problem-solving, and specialized equipment knowledge to support a facility that serves the entire installation.
Responsibilities
- System Operation: Operate the wastewater treatment plant, lift stations, and related systems to maintain safe and efficient performance
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and repair pumps, motors, filters, disinfection units, and other treatment equipment
- Lab Testing: Collect samples, perform lab analysis, complete reports, and follow all laboratory procedures
- Record Keeping: Record flows, log daily readings, track chemical use, and maintain compliance documentation
- Regulatory Compliance: Follow Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules, apply treatment formulas, and support National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit requirements
- Field Response: Monitor storm operations, check manholes, coordinate outside sampling, and adjust systems to prevent overflows
Qualifications
Required Experience, Training & Eligibility
- Successful completion of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee program and certification as a wastewater treatment plant operator for any class and type of plant; or
- Possession of a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators as a wastewater treatment plant operator for any class and type of plant
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater System Operators as a wastewater treatment plant operator that is equal to or greater than a Class B, Subclass E, 1 and 4 Certification
- Possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent
- Valid federal or state-issued photo ID and pass a favorable NCIC screening for admittance to Fort Indiantown Gap
- Obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction removed within one year of employment, and maintain it throughout employment
- Ability to perform essential job functions
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal training in wastewater management
- Experience in the operation of a Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)
- Experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of motors, pumps, compressors, valves, filters, and/or other related WWTP equipment
- Experience in performing sampling/testing of plant influent or effluent for environmental protection
