About the Role

This position plans, conducts, and evaluates all assigned Therapeutic Recreation Activities based on assessment and identified treatment goals for psychiatric patients. The role serves as an active member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, completes required documentation, supervises Activity Therapy Associates, and performs general duties pertinent to the Rehabilitation Services/Activity Therapy department.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate therapeutic recreation activities for psychiatric patients.
  • Serve as an active member of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Complete all required documentation.
  • Supervise Activity Therapy Associates.
  • Perform general duties related to the operation of the Rehabilitation Services/Activity Therapy department.
  • Write protocols and lesson plans for assigned groups according to procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation with a major in therapeutic recreation from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of experience performing therapeutic recreation in the treatment of mentally ill, aged, physically ill, physically disabled patients, or developmentally disabled clients.
  • Current certification as a Therapeutic Recreator from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification may substitute for the education requirements.
  • Experience as a professional therapeutic recreator under supervision, including responsibility for clients’ assessments and planning, implementation, and evaluation of recreation therapy treatment in a mental health or developmental disability setting, may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Physical Therapy classifications or Physical Therapist and Medical Specialists specialty codes in therapeutic work may substitute for the required experience and education on a year-for-year basis.

Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suites (Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets).
  • Knowledge of forensics, co-occurring, age-specific, and cultural issues impacting patients' treatment planning.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications

  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland, if assigned duties requiring vehicle operation.
  • May require a specific motor vehicle operator’s license for certain vehicles.
  • May require current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • At facilities with a swimming pool, may require Red Cross instruction and certification in Life Saving and Water Safety prior to appointment.
