Certified Therapeutic Recreactional Specialist

Responsible for the evaluation, goal setting, treatment, and documentation of patients in the assigned patient care areas. Designs, implements, evaluates, and documents individual and group therapeutic interventions to obtain patient goals and objectives. Performs other clinical and teaching duties as may be required. May assume the responsibilities of a facility dog handler.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic therapeutic recreation evaluations on assigned patients.
• Attends mandatory department in-services.
• Seeks opportunities to expand own knowledge of the profession and related fields.
• Complies with hospital and department policies and procedures.
• Appropriately delegates responsibilities to support staff and volunteers while maintaining an appropriate level of clinical supervision.
• Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsive, and courteous hospital environment.

Requirements

• Master’s degree preferred; minimum of a B.S. from an accredited Therapeutic Recreation Program or related field as outlined by the National Therapeutic Recreation Standards.
• Must hold or be currently pursuing CTRS certification from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. Certification is required within 3 months of employment.
• 1 year in a psychiatric setting and/or 2 years in child development is strongly preferred.
• NCTRC licensure.

Skills

• Demonstrated knowledge in therapeutic recreation theory, evaluation, and treatment techniques for various special population groups.
• Strong observation and communication skills (both verbal and written).
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Willingness and ability to assume increased responsibilities as required.
