About the role

The City of Alexandria is seeking a Therapeutic Recreation Leader to join the Center for Adult Services (CAS). This position involves creating, implementing, and leading therapeutic recreational programs for older adults with physical, cognitive, and intellectual disabilities. Key responsibilities include assisting with personal hygiene, physical and cognitive activities, and social interactions; developing and implementing behavior treatment plans; and planning and presenting creative therapeutic activities.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead daily therapeutic recreational activities
  • Provide direct care to physically and cognitively impaired participants, including toileting, changing soiled clothing, and assisting with ambulation
  • Inspect equipment and monitor activities to ensure safety standards are met and guidelines are followed
  • Keep accurate documentation of participants' progress, Medicaid case notes, and assessments; maintain daily attendance records
  • Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks; perform housekeeping duties such as kitchen clean-up, human waste cleanup, and yearly outdoor garden clean-up and maintenance
  • Record accurate temperatures of catered meal/menu items
  • In the absence of the Center Nurse, administer medications to participants, read doctors' orders, and complete medical administration records
  • Complete incident reports in the event of a fall, serious accident, or lost participant

Requirements

  • Two-Year College Degree
  • Good knowledge of the social and recreational sciences, including the theory, principles, and practices of therapeutic recreation
  • Ability to acquire appropriate certification in CPR and First Aid within the first three months of employment
  • Completion of a minimum 40-hour training program consistent with Department of Medical Assistance Services requirement or Nursing Assistant Certification
  • Valid driver's license issued by the State of your residence

Qualifications

  • Ability to relate to frail and/or impaired older adults and adults with disabilities
  • Skilled in interpersonal work relationships
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing with program participants, caregivers, and co-workers
  • Ability to break activities down into recreation skill levels that meet the needs of participants

Skills

  • Knowledge of the aging process
  • Ability to recognize emergencies and other health-threatening conditions for participants
  • Ability to implement activities for older adults in an adult day care program setting

Pay

The salary range for this position is $45,000 - $55,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.

Schedule

This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. Hours will be determined with the supervisor.
