Theatre Arts Production & Design- Theatre Crafts Lab Instructor Pool-Part-Time

This is a continuous recruitment to fill part-time, temporary faculty assignments on an as-needed basis for Theatre Crafts Lab classes.

About the Role

Theatre Crafts Lab classes are held Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday from 2:00 PM–5:10 PM in the Spring and Fall semesters. Each course consists of 6 lab units.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with and teach students from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive learning environment while imparting principles of theatre arts with a focus on scenic and prop construction.
• Adapt instructional methods to meet varying skill levels and learning styles.
• Read, interpret, and decipher communication tools for production teams, including CAD drafting packets, scaled production models, white models, painter’s elevations, 3D renderings, and detailed scene sheets.
• Translate creative concepts into tangible scenic assets.
• Apply comprehensive knowledge of scenic construction materials and methods, including lumber, metals, plastics, and advanced fabrication techniques such as welding, CNC routing, and 3D printing.
• Integrate traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies to produce high-quality scenic elements.
• Operate and supervise Ariel Work Platforms (AWPs) and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) safely, ensuring compliance with safety standards during scenic installation and strike.
• Prepare students for real-world careers in the performing arts and entertainment industries.
• Utilize LMS (Canvas) for course management.
• Employ innovative teaching practices to support success and retention of women, students of color, and students with disabilities.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and community leaders on programs and initiatives designed to assist historically underrepresented students.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in any discipline AND two years of professional experience, or
• Associate degree in any discipline AND six years of professional experience, or
• Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area, or
• Equivalent qualifications as determined by the District Equivalency Committee (may include related education, training, employment, and professional experience).
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.
• Ability to demonstrate how equity-minded practices relate to classroom instruction.
• All degrees must be from accredited postsecondary institutions; foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.

Qualifications

• Detailed experience teaching technical theatre courses, especially introductory classes.
• Highly proficient in scenic and prop construction, including materials (lumber, metals, plastics) and advanced fabrication techniques (welding, CNC routing, 3D printing).
• Certified and experienced in the safe operation of Ariel Work Platforms (AWPs) and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs).
• Extensive hands-on experience as a theatrical technician and stagehand in theme parks and entertainment venues.
• Understanding of Career and Technical Education (CTE) program objectives.
• LMS experience/training (Canvas).

Pay

• $1,572.67 – $1,725.85 per lecture unit rate
• $1,572.67 – $1,725.85 per lab parity unit rate
• $1,258.16 – $1,380.60 per lab unit rate
