About the Role

This position is a continuation of Beginning Musical Theatre Techniques, emphasizing stylistic techniques for musical theatre from the 1960s to present day. Individual exercises in acting, movement, and voice related to contemporary musical theatre are explored. An audition or interview is required for assigning solos and group performance roles. Instructor must be available starting February 2nd, 2026.

Courses may include:

• Beginning Musical Theatre 2 (MW 8:30-11:00am)
• Applied Voice (arranged hours based on instructor and student availability)
• Beginning Movement Techniques for Musical Theatre
• Beginning/Intermediate Musical Theatre

Successful candidates will work closely with the Musical Theatre Program Coordinator and report to the Department Coordinator of the Theatre Arts Department.

Responsibilities

• Teach courses in Musical Theatre Performance Technique, Auditioning for Musical Theatre, Applied Voice, and Beginning/Intermediate Movement for Musical Theatre.
• Practice and prepare difficult repertoire for performance with ensembles and applied students.
• Assist students in recital rehearsals.
• Help prepare students to perform musically with a piano and/or tracks for public performance.
• Maintain a friendly, supportive atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and the public.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and community leaders on Theatre Arts programs and initiatives supporting historically underrepresented students.
• Foster partnerships with local arts organizations and create mentorship opportunities for BIPOC and first-generation students.
• Develop inclusive curricula and productions reflecting diverse cultural narratives.

Requirements

• Master’s or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance, or
• Bachelor’s or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance and Master’s in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities, or
• Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area, or
• Equivalent qualifications as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

The award of all degrees must be verifiable on a legible transcript. Grade cards will not be accepted in lieu of transcripts. All degrees and coursework must be from accredited postsecondary institutions.

Desirable Qualifications

• Extensive knowledge of musical theatre repertoire and strong professional development as a director within the industry.
• Knowledge of current trends in the professional industry and the skills required to work within those trends.
• Teaching experience in one or more of the instructional areas mentioned in the job description.
• Comprehensive understanding of stylistic and technical nuances across various eras of musical theatre, including works by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Lloyd Webber, Jason Robert Brown, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
• Proficiency in working with diverse vocal styles, complex musical arrangements, and guiding performers through vocal, emotional, and technical demands.
• Experience with multi-genre, cross-cultural works and the ability to adapt direction to suit both traditional and innovative staging concepts.
• Directly related professional performance experience.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Expertise in culturally responsive teaching in theater arts, addressing equity gaps for racially minoritized groups.
• LMS experience/training (Canvas).
• Commitment to diversity and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

Pay

• Lecture unit rate: $1572.67 – $1725.85 per unit
• Lab parity unit rate: $1572.67 – $1725.85 per unit
• Lab unit rate: $1258.16 – $1380.60 per unit

Salary placement is based on education, within Column 1 – Column 3 of the adjunct salary schedule.
