Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Modern Chinese History

Position begins July 1, 2027. Doctoral degree in history (or a closely related discipline) must be completed by the time of appointment.

About the role

The Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Modern Chinese History, defined as 1895 to the present. We particularly welcome applicants with rich archival experience in multiple locations who examine China within a broad transnational context. The successful candidate will share our commitment to research, teaching, and mentoring to the highest standards of academic excellence.

Responsibilities

• Teach a survey course on modern China, along with other courses related to the candidate’s specialization at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Requirements

• Completed doctoral degree in history or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment.
• Demonstrated commitment to research, teaching, and mentoring.
