Lecturer, History (Modern East Asia with a focus on China)

Bentley University’s History Department seeks a full-time, renewable lecturer specializing in Modern East Asia with a focus on China. The position begins July 1, 2027.

About the Role

The History Department has a strong undergraduate presence, with nearly 200 minors, several dozen majors, and a newly established chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society. The teaching load is four classes per semester, with courses capped at 30 students.

The successful candidate will be an accomplished and committed teacher with a strong scholarly background and an active research agenda. They will engage students in both introductory surveys and upper-level undergraduate courses while contributing to the intellectual life of the department and university.

Responsibilities

• Teach Chinese history from approximately 1650 to the present.
• Offer courses that place China in broader East Asian, transnational, or global contexts, including courses involving Japan or Korea.
• Develop occasional offerings such as contemporary world history, the Vietnam War, or other Asia-related topics, depending on the candidate’s interests and departmental needs.
• Contribute to the department’s expanding curriculum, particularly in areas connecting modern East Asian history with capitalism, technology, and global trade.
• Participate in the administrative and intellectual life of the department and university.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in a relevant field of history, or completion of the Ph.D. scheduled by September 1, 2027.

Pay

Salary range for the Lecturer rank: $66,326 – $81,065, depending on qualifications and experience.
