About the Role

The Department of History at Northwestern University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in the history of modern Japan. We particularly encourage applications from historians who consider connections across and within the Japanese empire, the process of decolonization and its aftermath, and the global or regional contexts of Japanese history.

Responsibilities

  • Teach four courses annually over the course of three academic quarters
  • Advise graduate students
  • Contribute to a vibrant interdisciplinary community of Asianists both in and beyond the History Department

Qualifications

  • Hold a Ph.D. in History or an adjacent field by the start date of the appointment (September 1, 2027)

Pay

The expected base pay range for this position is $90,000 - $105,000 for a nine-month academic appointment, not including summer salary, subject to negotiation. The pay offered will be determined based on factors including experience and qualifications, departmental budget availability, internal comparators, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
