(Temporary/Substitute) Paraprofessional for Student Services (PACE)
About the Role
The Shasta College PACE department is seeking to build a pool of qualified applicants for substitute paraprofessional work. This position provides highly responsible instructional support and paraprofessional functions involved in the organization, direction, coordination, and supervision of the learning services program for students within Student Services Programs. The role offers direct learning assistance services to students, particularly those with disabilities or other educational disadvantages.
Employees in this classification receive limited supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures and may train, schedule, coordinate, and supervise the work of student staff. The role involves directing and overseeing the day-to-day activities, operations, and services of a learning service program, requiring a high degree of independence and initiative in academic, instructional, and/or vocational areas. Specific tasks may include using specialized software and equipment to convert textbooks and educational materials into accessible formats such as Braille, MP3, audio, large print, e-text, and other formats to ensure access for students with physical, hearing, visual, and learning disabilities.
The mission of Partners in Access to College Education (PACE) is to support students in acquiring equal access to Shasta College programs and facilities, provide services and instruction to help students reach their optimal level of achievement, and serve as a specialized resource for students, faculty, staff, and the community.
Responsibilities
- Provide learning assistance services to students with educational disadvantages in support of instructors and established instructional goals.
- Organize, direct, coordinate, and supervise learning assistance services, including providing auxiliary aids, special equipment, manuals, and environments.
- Train, orient, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of student aides and/or clerical assistants.
- Recruit, interview, and select student tutors and/or clerical assistants.
- Provide direct assistance to students, such as individual or group instructional support, coordinating note-providers, disability management assistance, alternate media formats, and provision of assistive technology equipment and materials.
- Confer with instructional staff and/or counselors regarding student weaknesses and/or need for special services.
- Develop instructional aids, resources, and materials to meet student needs; oversee the use of library and other resource materials.
- Monitor student progress and provide feedback to instructional staff and/or counselors.
- Maintain personnel information and records related to student staff, including verifying time worked, payroll information, and attendance.
- Establish and maintain record-keeping and filing systems related to program operations, student attendance, progress, and test results.
- Assist in the development and administration of program-related budgets.
- Develop and implement a checkout/return system for educational materials and equipment; order supplies, equipment, and materials, including instructional software.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels and inventory records of specialized materials and equipment.
- Facilitate timely updates/upgrades to educational support materials, including software and technology devices.
- Proctor classroom exams/quizzes for students according to program-specific guidelines.
- Prepare a variety of reports and correspondence related to assigned operations.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
Knowledge of:
- Needs of students with educational disadvantages, including disabilities.
- Principles, practices, and applications of student services programs.
- Principles, methods, and procedures of instructing and providing learning assistance to students with educational disadvantages.
- The proper use and operation of specialized equipment used by persons with communication and physical disabilities.
- Record-keeping methods and techniques.
Ability to:
- Learn District policies and procedures as applied to Student Services programs for students with educational disadvantages.
- Perform a variety of learning assistance functions in support of students with educational disadvantages.
- Monitor student progress and identify problem areas, strengths, and learning progress.
- Prepare, operate, maintain, and demonstrate educational equipment and materials, including those used by persons with disabilities.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment.
- Perform and delegate clerical work of varying difficulties.
- Communicate effectively and tactfully, both verbally and in writing.
- Understand and carry out a variety of verbal and written instructions independently.
- Respond to questions and inquiries with tact and courtesy.
- Work with a significant degree of independence and judgment.
- Organize work and set priorities.
- Supervise and/or train student assistants and/or other staff as assigned.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Qualifications
Education/Experience Required:
- A.A. degree or equivalent.
- Two years of directly related work experience.
Education Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
