About the role
This is a temporary position processing arthropod samples and assisting with field and laboratory research on small-fruit crops.
Responsibilities
- Process large numbers of arthropod samples under a stereoscope.
- Identify and record numbers of major insect and mite pests of small-fruit crops.
- Label and organize arthropod samples.
- Assist with greenhouse and field collection of arthropod samples.
- Assist with fieldwork involving excavation and uprooting of blueberry plants from research plots approximately 2–3 times per month, primarily outdoors in direct sunlight.
- Perform physically demanding fieldwork requiring prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, digging, and working in variable weather conditions.
- Safely operate heavy-duty hand tools and field equipment (shovels, hammers, axes, pruning shears, heavy-duty scissors, sharpened cutting tools, chainsaws) following all laboratory and field safety procedures.
- Open and process plant root masses in the laboratory to extract, collect, and document beetle larvae using hand tools and established protocols.
Requirements
- Experience processing large numbers of arthropod samples.
- Experience identifying and recording numbers of major insect and mite pests of small-fruit crops.
- Experience assisting with greenhouse and field collection of arthropod samples.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs.
- Valid driver’s license.
Experience using a stereoscope and with arthropod identification is preferred but not required; training can be provided.
Schedule
- 35–40 hours per week, 8 am–5 pm with a 1-hour lunch break.
- Fieldwork days may extend to 10–11 hours (1–3 days per week, 1–2 times per month).
Pay
$16.50 per hour.
