Temporary Research Technician

Department: Entomology • Location: Lexington, KY • Full-time temporary position

About the role

This position offers hands-on experience in molecular diagnostics, analytical chemistry, insect physiology and behavior, field surveillance, and Extension activities while contributing to Kentucky’s preparedness for the New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax).

Responsibilities

• Deploy and service field traps
• Collect, sort, preserve, and document specimens
• Identify screwworms and other blow flies
• Assist with DNA extraction and CRISPR-Cas12–based diagnostics
• Participate in volatile collection, GC-MS and GC-EAD analyses, and behavioral assays
• Maintain insect colonies
• Work closely with researchers, diagnostic laboratories, livestock producers, veterinarians, and Extension partners

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Ability to carry objects of 50 lbs. or less
• Comfortable working in a lab environment

Pay

$15.00–$17.00 per hour

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm (37.5 hours per week)
