Location: Big Rapids, MI (Main Campus)
Temporary, full-time position within the Custodial, Maintenance, Dining, Skilled Trade (AFSCME Local 1609) union group. Term of position is 12 months with a just-cause employment status. Schedule varies by semester: fall hours are 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday; summer hours are 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM, Sunday through Thursday. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
About the Role
A Temporary Dish Machine Operator provides food-service support at The Rock Café, including preparing and serving food, waiting on customers, and maintaining the assigned area.
Responsibilities
- Assist other food-service workers as needed.
- Clean assigned areas: sweeping, mopping, washing walls, filters, and hoods.
- Clean, polish, and maintain dish-room equipment.
- Communicate with management and cooks regarding food waste.
- De-lime dish machine as required.
- Ensure dishes, racks, stands, and carts are clean and sanitized.
- Interact with customers and staff in a polite, friendly, and courteous manner.
- Maintain soap-supply area in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition.
- Monitor and maintain dish-room equipment (garbage disposal, dish machine, soap dispenser).
- Perform duties of other Dining Service classifications when assigned.
- Pre-scrape and pre-rinse eating and cooking utensils; sort silverware; operate dishwashing equipment.
- Train and direct assigned student employees.
- Transport clean silverware, dishes, and trays to the dining room.
- Maintain safety and sanitation standards in all duties.
- Report to immediate supervisor.
- Carry out responsibilities in accordance with university policies and applicable laws.
- Cultivate an environment of belonging that values individual similarities and differences.
- Support university student enrollment and retention initiatives.
- Remove trash, break down cardboard boxes, and assist in recycling efforts.
- Perform any other duties assigned within the position classification.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalency.
- Six months full-time equivalent experience in commercial food service, including food preparation.
- Ability to communicate effectively and interact with the public courteously.
- Ability to follow safety and sanitation standards.
- Ability to operate and clean dish machines and related equipment.
- Ability to read and follow directions, safety labels, and equipment manuals.
- Ability to wash pots, pans, and utensils and return them to storage.
- Ability to work harmoniously in variable temperatures, close confines, noise, and stressful situations.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to push/pull carts weighing up to 125 pounds.
- Demonstrated experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
