About the Role

Responsible for the physical security of facilities under the purview of the Sheriff. Maintain a uniformed presence in various buildings and hearings to deter crime and ensure a safe working environment for personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol facilities and conduct security checks.
  • Provide entrance security to various buildings.
  • Provide security at public hearings.
  • Field telephone inquiries regarding Sheriff’s Office services.
  • Assist with courtroom security and transportation of prisoners as assigned.
  • Inform and direct the public on matters pertaining to the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Direct and assist in building evacuations during emergencies and administer first aid when necessary.
  • Respond to distress calls throughout assigned buildings and parking lots.
  • Coordinate with the Harford County Government Safety Officer on operational questions and projects.
  • Unlock and lock buildings at designated opening and closing times for the public and employees; open offices as needed.
  • Maintain security desk, including monitoring video surveillance cameras, answering telephones, assisting the public, and controlling access.
  • Provide guidance to visitors and process access requests to identified locations.
  • Provide security services for pre-termination hearings conducted by the County Department of Human Resources.
  • Monitor video surveillance systems, ensure proper operation, and use replay systems in case of incidents.
  • Report Harford County Public Library alarms appropriately.
  • Keep Commander and relevant personnel informed of issues in a timely manner.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with agency and County staff.
  • Attend meetings and participate in teams as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a law enforcement officer in good standing currently holding certification with the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) or able to be recertified by MPCTC without entrance-level training or comparative compliance.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with no more than 3 points and no convictions for DUI.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation, criminal record check, medical exam, drug/alcohol screening, polygraph exam, and psychological screening.
  • Must provide a handwriting sample for review.
  • Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from an Oral Interview Board.
  • Visible tattoos permitted if not offensive, indecent, extremist, racist, or sexist; no visible tattoos on the face or head.
  • Must demonstrate a history of honesty, reliability, integrity, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.

Skills

  • Knowledge of standard security practices and equipment.
  • Knowledge of fire hazards and fire equipment, including ability to use such equipment.
  • Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff’s Office to the public.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine proper courses of action.
  • Ability to deal firmly, tactfully, and courteously with the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to speak effectively in public forums.
  • Ability to establish priorities, organize workload, and meet deadlines with independent judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, County personnel, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphere.
  • Proficiency in operating relevant computer systems (MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and office machines.
  • Ability to work various hours, including day, evening, and weekend assignments.
  • Ability to maintain MPCTC certification through annual in-service requirements and firearms qualifications.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and random drug screening.

Pay

Starting salary is $35.19 per hour ($73,195 annual). Opportunities for overtime, compensatory time, and uniform allowance are available.
