Law Enforcement Deputy
About the role
The Law Enforcement Deputy position with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office is aimed at individuals with a strong work ethic, integrity, good judgment under pressure, and a passion for protecting the citizens of Travis County. The role involves performing law enforcement duties to protect lives, property, and rights of citizens by patrolling assigned districts, enforcing local, state, and federal laws, and providing public safety.
Responsibilities
- Maintains order and responds to emergencies, protecting people and property.
- Patrols assigned areas, maintaining situational awareness for crime prevention.
- Responds to emergency calls and routine complaints, recording offenses and accidents.
- Identifies, pursues, and arrests suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts.
- Interviews complainants, witnesses, and defendants, preparing appropriate charges to book arrested suspects.
- Investigates accidents and incidents, determining if criminal acts or statute violations were involved.
- Makes arrests, starts booking procedures, and assumes control at crime scenes.
- Collects and submits evidence, photographs major fatality accidents, and conducts surveillance and search and seizures.
- Locates fugitives, develops informants, and conducts vehicular traffic control and enforcement.
- Issues traffic citations, directs traffic, and investigates traffic accidents and crimes against persons and property.
- Serves court processes, files charges, and testifies in court.
- Prepares sworn affidavits for the issuance or execution of search warrants.
- Provides training and teaches throughout the community.
- Performs administrative duties as required.
- Provides assistance to qualified recipients of various crime programs.
Requirements
Must be a US Citizen, 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and qualify with a weapon annually in accordance with Departmental Standards. Must meet the Physical Readiness Testing requirements according to TCSO policy. Must possess basic Peace Officer Certification from TCOLE, a valid Drivers' License, and be able to obtain a State of Texas driver's license within 90 days. Must be able to control emotions and focus on professional duties, listen effectively, communicate clearly, and maintain a professional demeanor. Must be proficient in computer operations, vehicle operations, radio communications, scene management, and investigation and evidence control. Must be able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds occasionally, lift and drag an average weight person of 150 lbs for 75 feet, and participate in defensive tactics training and annual refresher training.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Code of Criminal Procedure, Penal Code, transportation code, and other state statutes and county ordinances.
- Applicable county policies including Travis County Civil Service Rules, TCSO policies and procedures, and department organization and function.
- Basic Microsoft office skills.

The starting salary is $72,141.20/year, with additional pay for 5+ years of experience with Intermediate peace officer certification or higher, and 10+ years of experience with Advanced peace officer certification or higher.

Schedule
Varying shifts and extended hours related to emergency situations are required. Work hours are subject to change with little or no notice.
