About the Role
Tutors assist students in achieving their full potential by facilitating collaborative tutorial groups. Using Socratic questioning and collaborative learning techniques, tutors help students develop answers independently and through peer interaction. Tutorials are conducted in small, subject-specific groups, with tutors playing an active role in the learning, growth, and personal development of students.
Responsibilities
- Conduct tutorial sessions emphasizing collaborative learning and peer teaching through discussion of class and text notes.
- Identify key concepts for focus during sessions using student tutorial worksheets, notes, and discussions.
- Guide students to take responsibility for their own active learning while teaching strategies for independent use.
- Reinforce the idea that learning extends beyond studying to support long-term academic and personal accomplishments.
- Assist students in any subject area by familiarizing yourself with textbooks, materials, and classroom resources.
- Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, and learning logs.
- Teach study skills and other aspects of college preparation.
- Maintain a positive tone and atmosphere in the classroom.
- Acknowledge individual student needs and foster academic and personal pride.
- Support the coordinator as requested, such as contacting teachers for course outlines, assisting with field trips, or communicating with parents.
- Develop and maintain a resource file of enrichment materials for tutorial sessions.
- Communicate regularly with coordinators and teachers regarding student progress and areas of concern.
- Conduct mini-lessons on writing, study skills, and other college preparation topics.
- Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for students.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by a supervisor.
Requirements
- Ability to use SMART boards, iPads, and basic office equipment (computers, copiers, scanners, fax machines) in compliance with USD 259’s guidelines.
- Limited travel between schools and central offices may be required.
- Work in standard office and school building environments, including outdoor student activities as needed.
- Respond rapidly in emergency situations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with students, staff, and external contacts.
- Ability to work effectively under supervision and as part of a team.
- Strong planning, organization, decision-making, and prioritization skills.
- Professional manner, positive attitude, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Adhere to professional dress and appearance standards.
- Understand and align with the district’s mission, purpose, goals, and your role in achieving them.
- Ability to work with middle school and/or high school students individually or in small groups.
- Familiarity with curriculum materials in the Curriculum Libraries.
- Strong math background to conduct tutorial sessions in all areas of mathematics.
- Ability to assist students in all phases of the writing process, including brainstorming, revision, and editing.
Qualifications
- High School Education or GED equivalent is required.
- Experience working with a diverse population and handling situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to interact professionally with internal and external customers, providing responsive and friendly service.
This position is non-exempt under the FLSA.
