AVID is a system that supports potential college students by teaching them college readiness skills. Tutors are essential to the program, working with students in study groups and individually to assist them in all academic areas, ensuring progress aligns with college expectations. Responsibilities
- Conduct tutorial sessions that emphasize collaborative learning and peer teaching through discussion of class and text notes.
- Determine focus areas for tutorial sessions using student worksheets, notes, and discussions.
- Guide students to take responsibility for their own active learning while teaching independent strategies.
- Reinforce the idea that learning extends beyond studying to support long-term academic and personal growth.
- Assist students in any subject area by familiarizing yourself with their textbooks, materials, and AVID classroom resources.
- Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, and learning logs.
- Assist in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation.
- Maintain a positive tone and atmosphere in the AVID classroom.
- Acknowledge the individuality of all AVID students and foster their academic and personal pride.
- Support the AVID coordinator with tasks such as contacting teachers, assisting with field trips, and communicating with parents.
- Develop a resource file of enrichment materials for tutorial sessions.
- Communicate regularly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
- Conduct mini-lessons on writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other college preparation topics.
- Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for students to follow.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Requirements
- Ability to work in small groups or individually with middle school and/or high school students.
- Familiarity with the AVID Curriculum Libraries.
- Strong math background to conduct tutorial sessions in all areas of mathematics.
- Ability to assist students in any phase of the writing process, including brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with others inside and outside the organization.
- Good judgment to make decisions on recurring assignments.
- Professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Understanding of the organization’s mission, purpose, goals, and the role of employees in achieving them.
- Punctuality and adherence to scheduled work hours; prior approval required for any deviations.
- Dress in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for the position.
Qualifications
A high school education or GED equivalent is required. This is a non-exempt position.
