About the role
The Police Telecommunicator is the College community’s point of contact when requesting a response for police resources. They promote the College Values and customer service without compromise. This essential position is required to work during natural or man-made emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Operates non-emergency/emergency telephones, two-way radios, telecommunications/computer terminal equipment, cameras, and alarm and security systems.
- Provides dispatch-related services to district-wide faculty, staff, and employees with respect to community-oriented policing.
- Conducts accurate and prompt telecommunication operations, completes initial and subsequent training, and supports the protection and maintenance of sensitive communications equipment.
- Maintains 24-hour police office visibility, accessibility, and readiness in dispatch services for crises or emergencies.
- Maintains consistent radio contact with campus police officers on patrol, relaying information accurately and quickly regarding safety, crime prevention, emergencies, and officer safety.
- Determines and contacts appropriate support if situational factors suggest aid beyond or in addition to campus police.
- Understands the jurisdictions of surrounding police agencies and the geography of each campus and its structures.
- Monitors and responds to fire alarm systems, documenting daily test signals and alarm incidents.
- Conducts and reports security equipment testing, including campus emergency phones, panic signal devices, and elevator devices.
- Generates maintenance requests for inoperable or damaged property.
- Monitors dispatch office email for employee requests and advisories.
- Understands campus police regulations regarding master key accessibility and entry services.
- Maintains accurate documentation of patrol activities and provides officers with necessary information.
- Documents and provides officers with protective orders, case numbers, and required student records.
- Understands officer safety fundamentals and risk factors associated with patrol.
- Answers all incoming emergency and non-emergency phone calls, documents each call, and forwards to supervisor.
- Obtains critical details from individuals in high-stress situations.
- Maintains personal records of passwords and access to police office databases, adhering to privacy laws and regulations.
- Regularly updates contact information for employees and outside sources.
- Prioritizes and assigns emergency calls for service.
- Operates specialized communications networking equipment and computer terminals to access confidential law enforcement information (TLETS).
- Performs duties related to crisis management for natural disasters, chemical leaks, or national incidents.
- Assists Sergeants, Officers, and Dispatchers with tickets and reports (in person, phone, and email).
- Dispatches officers and notifies command/supervisors and administrative personnel of incidents.
- Performs general office duties, including answering telephones, printing, filing documents, and other assigned tasks.
- Interacts with the public to provide information and assistance.
- Receives and records information/requests related to police services.
- Maintains the highest level of professional standards and complies with all College and Police Department policies.
- Answers phones, assists with ticket and appeal questions, and supports students with general inquiries.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must pass an intensive background check, including criminal history and previous employment records.
- Must complete Basic Telecommunicator Proficiency Certification or initial Basic Telecommunicator course and subsequent training within one year of employment.
- Must complete TCIC/NCIC required certification within one year.
- American Heart Association training course: Basic Lifesaving Skills for Healthcare Providers within one year.
- Must be available for mandatory overtime, shift work, and non-traditional days off.
- Must work extended hours as necessitated by emergencies or staffing contingencies.
- Physical presence at the assigned on-site work location is required with limited or no opportunity for remote work.
Skills
- Able to operate a multi-line telephone system and two-way radio system.
- Strong multi-tasking abilities and ability to work under pressure.
- Proficient in data entry into police records management/computer-aided dispatch systems.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Internet research.
- Self-motivated with excellent communication and public relations skills.
- Excellent front office and telephone skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities with little supervision.
- Communicates clearly and distinctly in English.
- Ability to work with people from all backgrounds in a team environment.
- Types a minimum of 30 words per minute with basic word processing skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Must satisfactorily complete San Jacinto College training courses in Banner, the college database system.
- Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative personality.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of related experience in higher education.
- Bilingual/multi-lingual.
- Basic TCOLE Police Telecommunicator License.
Pay
Salary is based on the Board-approved salary schedule for the current fiscal year (Salary Grade: 106).
