Technician, Sound & Film Resources

The Technician for Sound Film Resources will be integral to the daily operations of the Parsons Making Center, a 70,000 sq.ft. hub of labs, shops, studios, and workspaces supporting interdisciplinary making across mediums. This role interfaces daily with students and faculty, supporting sound and video production, filmmaking equipment, and related facilities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations of assigned Making Center facilities and maintain a clean, safe working environment.
• Cultivate a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment and respectful shop culture.
• Provide high-level customer service to students, faculty, and staff.
• Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and install hardware/software technologies; stay current with field developments.
• Assist supervisor and leadership with:
  • Supporting faculty and students
  • Leading equipment demo sessions
  • Recommending hardware/software purchases and processes
  • Creating and updating web content
  • Conducting orientations, trainings, and tours
  • Onboarding new technician staff through peer trainings
• Maintain administrative systems for scheduling, record keeping, inventories, and metrics.
• Support store and tool checkout functions for assigned areas.
• Supervise student workers, including training, accountability tracking, and task assignment.
• Become proficient in Web Check Out or current equipment management system within 6 months.
• Create clear, user-friendly technical documentation, signage, and instructions.
• Assist with facility improvement projects, shows, installations, and special initiatives.
• Adapt to changing work environments, meet deadlines, and prioritize competing demands.
• Maintain organized workspaces, track inventory, and monitor communication networks.
• Use ladders and hardware to support facility needs.
• Maintain audio and filmmaking equipment, studios, and materials.
• Maintain audio and filmmaking interfaces and software in labs.
• Perform inventory, prepare checkouts, and deliver equipment to classrooms as needed.
• Complete university-required staff training and COF’s within the first 6 months.
• Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of relevant or professional experience within the industry.
• Flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and semester changes.
• Knowledge of analog and digital filmmaking processes, including:
  • Analog/experimental/digital audio and filmmaking
  • Digital input/output
  • Studio and on-location lighting
  • Sound recording
• Technical knowledge of analog and digital technologies, including:
  • 16mm film cameras
  • Digital video/cinema equipment
  • Audio recording equipment
  • Studio and on-location lighting/grip equipment
  • Projectors, steadicams, media players, Mac minis, tablets, and smart devices
• Experience maintaining and troubleshooting equipment/tools.
• Understanding of cross-platform (Windows and macOS) environments, including:
  • Large-scale hardware/software deployment
  • Network systems
  • Color calibration/profiling
• Direct experience with:
  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Google Docs
  • Audio production processes, equipment, and software (e.g., Pro Tools)
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; strong organizational and time management abilities.
• Ability to assist students with interdisciplinary/experimental projects from concept to fabrication.
• Ability to lift objects up to 25 lbs, occasionally up to 50 lbs.
• Knowledge of Webcheckout or comparable equipment management systems.
• Knowledge of Motion Capture and Augmented/Virtual Reality practices.
• Desire to learn new skills and processes related to Parsons Making Center initiatives.

Schedule

This is a full-time, in-person position based on campus. The schedule includes non-traditional hours such as nights and weekends, with shifts adjusting to semester changes.

Pay

$28.52 per hour / $51,906.40 per annum.
