About the Role
Orange County Government is committed to serving the public with integrity and professionalism, developing innovative policies and services that impact Central Florida. The award-winning Orange County Convention Center (OCCC), one of the largest convention facilities in the U.S., seeks an on-call Maintenance Apprentice to work alongside full-time staff. This role provides hands-on experience in various trades, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and more, while maintaining the facility’s top operational condition. Ideal for those currently enrolled in technical programs or seeking additional hours in the trades industry.
Responsibilities
- Perform general repair and maintenance on building electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and electronic systems, as well as structures (e.g., painting, door repair, carpet/tile repair, irrigation inspections).
- Operate hydraulic equipment and computerized maintenance systems.
- Interact with exhibitors and staff to ensure high customer service standards.
- Multi-skilled tasks, including installing temporary services for exhibits on the show floor.
- Adhere to the Center of Hospitality (COH) standards.
- Work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, based on show activity.
- Perform specialized maintenance tasks in the following areas:
- Carpentry: Drywall repairs, framing, door installation/repair, hanging displays.
- Plumbing: Unclogging drains, fixing leaks, installing/replacing toilets, sinks, and water lines.
- Electrical: Replacing light fixtures, outlets, ballasts, circuit breakers, and switches; resetting equipment.
- Roofing: Patching roofs, locating leaks, sealing drains, and removing vegetation.
- Flooring: Repairing/replacing carpet, tile, linoleum, and baseboards.
- Masonry: Concrete repairs on sidewalks, retaining walls, and other structures.
- HVAC: Minor repairs to motors/valves, replacing filters/belts, preventive maintenance, and cleaning equipment.
Requirements
- Basic maintenance knowledge in at least one of the following: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, flooring, or masonry.
- Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must pass pre-employment drug test, physical, and background check.
Qualifications
- Current enrollment in a technical program (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry) or general experience in building/facility maintenance is preferred.
- Professional licenses (e.g., electrical, plumbing) may qualify for additional compensation.
- Veterans’ Preference: Eligible veterans must provide documentation by the closing date. Note: Preference applies only to a veteran’s first promotion after reinstatement/reemployment.
Education
- U.S. degrees/diplomas must be accredited by a USDE or CHEA-recognized agency.
- Foreign education must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a NACES or AICE member (at applicant’s expense).
Pay
- Technician (Up to 3 years experience): $16.40 – $17.49/hour.
- Senior Technician (3+ years experience): $16.94 – $25.68/hour.
- Additional compensation for professional electrical or plumbing licenses.
Schedule
- On-call shifts available: Thursday–Tuesday (1st and 2nd shifts).
