About the role

The Technical Writer II supports a large-scale Army test and evaluation program, providing data collection, technical writing, computer operations, range scheduling, and administrative support services necessary to execute the government’s test mission. Support encompasses testing of a wide variety of automotive, combat, electronic, general equipment, and ordnance materiel, with services including data collection and coordination, data compilation and processing, development and management of data collection forms, test monitoring, technical writing and editorial review, reporting, data and software administration, range scheduling, and related operational support.

Work will be performed primarily onsite in Aberdeen, Maryland, with travel to other locations within the Continental United States (CONUS) and Outside the Continental United States (OCONUS) as required by mission needs. This position is contingent upon contract award.

Responsibilities

  • Review completed technical writing projects prepared by others.
  • Apply knowledge of regulations and policies affecting government publications, publishing concepts and practices, publication standards, and advances in publishing technology.
  • Use technical terminology, jargon, document formats, and multimedia formats in the development and review of technical publications.
  • Develop, write, and edit reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instruction books, catalogs, and related technical and administrative publications.
  • Develop technical materials concerning work methods and procedures and the installation, operation, and maintenance of machinery and other equipment.
  • Organize material and complete writing assignments according to established standards for order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Review published materials and recommend revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods of reproduction and binding.
  • Maintain records and files of work products and revisions.
  • Assist with the layout of photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts used to illustrate technical material.
  • Insert web links, photographs, graphics, and video files into publications as required.
  • Coordinate typing, duplication, and distribution of materials.
  • Assist in developing speeches, articles, and public or employee relations releases.
  • Edit, standardize, and revise materials prepared by other writers or technical personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or another scientific discipline and three (3) years of technical writing experience supporting Army research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) programs; OR an Associate’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or another scientific discipline and five (5) years of technical writing experience supporting Army RDT&E programs; OR ten (10) years of technical writing experience supporting Army RDT&E programs.
  • Must possess a high school diploma.
  • Must be proficient in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers and Microsoft Office software.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned functions, which may include working in extreme heat or cold, high humidity, blowing sand and dust, confined spaces, at heights, and walking distances over unimproved terrain while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Must be available to support work outside normal duty hours when required by mission needs.
  • Must be willing and able to travel within CONUS and OCONUS as required.
