Technical Training and Testing Instructor - Fitout

About the Role

This position oversees testing and training of structural personnel, external applicants, and employees for promotional testing and certification needs at Austal USA. The role involves facilitating training platforms, monitoring training metrics, preparing curriculum, and maintaining training records.

Responsibilities

• Oversee Austal USA testing and training of structural personnel in accordance with contract standards, criteria, and specifications.
• Monitor testing of Austal USA external applicants to all naval codes, criteria, and specifications when applicable.
• Oversee testing and training of Austal USA employees’ promotional testing, certification needs, and general training.
• Facilitate and oversee training platforms for entry-level employees.
• Monitor, track, and communicate training-related metrics and statistics to MTC Management, partner company personnel, and Production.
• Prepare curriculum, lesson plans, and supporting training materials.
• Compute and submit testing and training results.
• Maintain stock of inventory: coupons, filler material, consumables, etc.
• Perform basic filing and record keeping.
• Champion company safety rules, procedures, and protocols.
• Maintain an environment conducive to training.
• Assist in continuous improvement of processes and procedures.
• Complete documentation of testing and training-related activities.
• Demonstrate proper use, care, and protection of company equipment and ensure students do the same.
• Commit to the principles of 5S.
• Demonstrate an exemplary work ethic and maintain appropriate instructor/student relationships.
• Perform other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

• Technical degree or applicable craft certification preferred.
• Minimum of 4 years in Fitout A Class experience preferred.
• Demonstrate competent craft skills in applicable craft to Technical Training Management.
• Journeyman certification in applicable craft through experience or completion of a certified program preferred.
• Possess and maintain weld certifications required for craft, as applicable.
• Thorough knowledge of craft procedures.
• Instructional experience preferred.
• Ability to diagnose and correct issues with applicable craft.
• Knowledge of proper use of equipment and tools, including safe operation.
• Basic skills in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) preferred.
• Self-directed, able to take initiative, problem-solve, and exercise good independent judgment.
• Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Good written and oral communication skills.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.
• Occasionally required to sit.
• Ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
• Perform prolonged standing.
• Ability to turn head and body at the waist from side to side.
• Lift/push/pull 50–75 lbs on an occasional basis and up to 20 lbs on a frequent basis.
• Ability to climb safely (stairs, scaffolding, ladders, ramps).
• Work at heights above 12’ using ladders, scaffolding, or man lifts.
• Work at a variety of levels (waist, eye, overhead).
• Demonstrate safe and appropriate use of required tools and equipment.
• Good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles.
• Sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment.
• Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards.
• Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures.
• Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods.
• Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands.
• Adequate visual skills.
• Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, out, to the side, and down.
• Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material (size, shape, temperature, texture) by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.
• Ability to project voice in a classroom environment.

Work Environment

• Regularly exposed to humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat.
• Occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and cold.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

Tools are provided. Training may be supplied to support the position, and travel may be necessary for certain training portions. Candidates must be 18 years or older, able to provide proof of US Person Status, and willing to submit to a drug screen and background check. No felony convictions for theft/deception or violent crimes within seven years, or drug crimes within three years from disposition date.
