Position Summary
Plans, installs, repairs, and maintains multiple communication systems within CPS Energy. This includes Land Mobile Radio systems, microwave radios, wireless networks, LTE/LTE-A/5G end point modems, point to point radio, and point to multi-point radio, mesh radio networks, as well as In Building Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) systems.
Tasks And Responsibilities
- Develop, socialize, and execute projects as needed in support of various wireless network technologies.
- Ensure that projects and tasks are properly executed and documented.
- Install, maintain, repair, monitor and administer corporate radio communication systems, digital point to point microwave radio systems, voice radio systems, SCADA radio systems, and Advanced Metering Infrastructure.
- Installation of RF antenna system components, to include coaxial cabling, cable supports, grounding, antenna mounting structures, weather proofing, connectors, and associated mounting hardware.
- Perform field level troubleshooting wireless infrastructure equipment, physical wiring, interrogate wireless devices, perform upgrades, overbuilds, and expansions as necessary. Maintain system diagrams and documentation for system implementation.
- Maintain a high level of technical proficiency as technology evolves. Perform systems integration to corporate applications.
- Demonstrate radio equipment to customers and explain how it is to be used and respond to any inquiries or complaints. Participate in investigations related to incidents and problems affecting communication services.
- Interact with Communication Services engineering and maintenance personnel, organization employees in a maintenance capacity or servicing end-user equipment and vendors/contractors supplying goods and/or services to the organization.
- Operate computer equipment.
- Knowledgeable in use of various test equipment, service monitor, line sweep gear, spectrum analyzer, and multi-meter.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate of Applied Science Degree in Communications Technology, Electronics, or a related field. Telecommunications relevant and equivalent experience considered.
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
- Intermediate years of direct, hands-on experience with a broad range of technologies and sciences, including some of the following: Conventional Radio systems, Wireless Mesh Systems, P25 Phase 1 or Phase 2 radio systems, Mobile Data Radio systems, Multiple Address Systems, or Advanced Metering Infrastructure.
- Knowledge of TCP/IP/WAN/LAN, basic networking protocols and their applications.
- Basic understanding of networking technologies and components such as switches, routers, firewalls, access points, and wireless bridges.
- Knowledgeable about security communications procedures and needs.
- Knowledgeable about electric grid system operations needs for communications, voice, and SCADA.
- Requires skills in the specific areas of antenna testing, troubleshooting, and repair of RF radio networks, radio base station and control equipment.
- Knowledgeable in programming various types of telecommunications equipment as needed to support the network.
- Act as a point of contact for all types of service requests.
- Communicate directly with other company divisions as needed.
- Assist in coordination of the support teams to maximize communication.
- Monitor alert systems and take appropriate action.
- Assist in the emergency restoration process for support requests requiring escalation.
- Work with support technicians and management to do whatever is necessary to provide excellent service.
- Maintains equipment inventories to ensure components are available for break/fix repairs as needed. Requests equipment replenishment as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate of Applied Science Degree in Communications Technology, Electronics, or related field.
- Direct, hands-on experience with a broad range of technologies and sciences, including: Conventional Radio Systems, wireless mesh systems, L3/Harris P25 Phase 2 radio systems, Mobile Data Radio system, Multiple Address System, and Advanced Metering Infrastructures.
- Distribution Automation experience preferred.
- L3/Harris P25 Portable Radio programming.
- Working knowledge of TCP/IP/WAN/LAN, advanced networking protocols and their applications.
- Working understanding of networking technologies and components such as switches, routers, firewalls, access points, and wireless bridges.
- Knowledgeable about security communications procedures and needs.
- Direct knowledge of electric grid system operations needs for communications, voice and SCADA.
- Programming experience with LTE modems for SCADA communications.
- Requires skills in the specific areas of antenna testing, troubleshooting, and repair of RF radio networks, radio base station and control equipment.
- Working knowledge of programming various types of telecommunications equipment as needed to support the network.

Working Environment
- Works both indoor and outdoor work locations as well as hazardous electric/gas substation environments.
- Must possess the ability to operate associated test equipment as well as hand and power tools in these elements.
- Required to ascend and work out of aerial bucket trucks as well as descend into underground manholes as needed.
- Manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion skills as needed.
- Must be able to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events.
- Must be able to work after hours work and 24-hour x 7 day a week, call duty assignments are required.
Physical Demands
- Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally with or without accommodation, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently with or without accommodation, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Ability to perform these duties in all weather conditions and climates including heat, cold, rain, etc.
- Must be able to identify all colors associated with telecommunications cables and equipment.
