Teaching Assistant

Responsibilities

• Provide direct instructional services to students under the supervision of a certified teacher, utilizing lesson plans, tests, and teaching aids developed by the teacher.
• Reinforce subject matter previously taught by guiding students through prescribed and repetitive learning exercises.
• Administer, proctor, and correct tests.
• Additional duties as discussed during the interview.

Requirements

• Possession of a current certificate issued by the NYS Education Department in one of the following:
  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant Certificate; or
  • Pre-Professional Teaching Assistant Certificate; or
  • Continuing Certificate as a Teaching Assistant; or
  • Provisional, Initial, Permanent, or Professional Teacher Certificate.
• Maintain New York State certification as listed above for continued employment.

Background Investigation

All prospective employees will undergo a Criminal Background Check (CBC), including State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. Convictions must be reported; a felony or misdemeanor conviction, or falsified/omitted information on the application, may disqualify or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be reviewed individually under applicable laws.

Prospective employees will be fingerprinted and screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). For Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth (DJJOY) positions, candidates will also be checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL); those found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment.
