Teaching Assistant

Housed under the newly developed University Consortium of Schools (previously PreK-12), the UCLA Lab School is an innovative school for children ages 4-12 and a laboratory for teachers and researchers in the School of Education & Information Studies (SE&IS) at UCLA. The Business Office manages and supports an annual budget of $11 million and oversees over 100 academic and career employees, 30+ student workers, independent contractors, and volunteers.

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Demonstration Teacher and the Academic Coordinator/Administrator, provide instructional and classroom support and supervise students at the UCLA Lab School. This position may be subject to possible curtailment during breaks and summer months.

Responsibilities

• Provide a wide variety of classroom and instructional support to assist the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students.
• Collaborate with teaching and administrative staff to implement the day-to-day educational program at the UCLA Lab School.
• Supervise students during non-classroom activities such as lunch, recess, field trips, arrival, and dismissal.
• Provide non-instructional assistance to office staff and teachers.
• Apply teaching theory and approaches to relevant classroom teaching.
• Make inventory of curriculum materials and equipment for classroom use.
• Set up and organize classroom materials for children within a set schedule.
• Create learning aids that strengthen lesson plans.
• Comprehend the purpose of teacher-designed strategies as fulfillment of instructional objectives.
• Discern inappropriate or concerning student behavior and refer it to the supervisor discreetly.
• Respond to sensitive incidents (visible illness, behavior/emotional problems, lack of bladder control, minor injuries, etc.) with sound judgment to safeguard the child's confidence and dignity.
• Impart information to children at their level of comprehension verbally, in writing, or through visual aids.
• Solve minor problems related to children's social interactions and disagreements with discretion, sensitivity, and diplomacy.
• Follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions with minimal supervision.
• Write grammatically correct lesson plans and curriculum materials.
• Use PC or Macintosh computers efficiently with the most current version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Operate audiovisual equipment and frequently used office machines.
• Record and store data accurately for efficient retrieval.

Requirements

• Bilingual: skill in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish/English. (Required)
• Skill in speaking clearly and simply to convey information and directions to children. (Required)
• Ability to work and speak to people of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds to welcome and establish good working relationships with staff, parents, and children. (Required)
• Skill in contributing to a positive and stimulating educational environment.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relations with other staff members. (Required)
• Demonstrated experience working with children in a pre-K–6th educational environment. (Required)
• Working knowledge of effective and appropriate methods of working with children. (Required)
• Working knowledge of core subjects in a pre-K to 6 environment.
• Knowledge of expected or age-appropriate behavior of children, including basic characteristics of ages and stages. (Required)
• Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions with minimal supervision. (Required)
• Skills in writing grammatically correct lesson plans and curriculum materials. (Required)
• Skill to use PC or Macintosh computers efficiently using the most current version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). (Required)
• Skill sufficient to operate audiovisual equipment and frequently used office machines. (Required)

Special Conditions

• Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
• Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory TB test.
• The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA. The employee must sign the "Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse."

Pay

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, and certifications, among other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common.
