Teacher - Special Education, Educational Resource Classroom (ERC) (Temporary)

195 contract days, temporary position for the 2026-2027 school year only (1.00 FTE).

About the Role

The Special Education Teacher facilitates student success in the least restrictive environment by implementing district-approved curriculum, documenting progress, and addressing academic, interpersonal, social, self-management, and daily living skills. The role ensures access to the general education curriculum and non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible.

Responsibilities

• Instruct students with individualized special needs to develop academic, interpersonal, self-management, and daily living skills (e.g., toileting/hygiene) through a defined course of study.
• Manage classroom and individual student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Prepare teaching materials and reports (e.g., Individualized Education Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans, grades, attendance, progress reports).
• Assess students for eligibility into special education and evaluate their social (behavioral, motor development, communication) and academic needs (developmental level, vocational abilities).
• Collaborate with school personnel and community agencies to develop and modify programs, plan curriculum, and maximize student outcomes.
• Direct instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student aides to address individual student needs.
• Adapt lessons to implement IEP goals and meet the special needs of students.
• Advise parents/legal guardians on student progress, expectations, and methods for improvement.
• Facilitate special education meetings for students with or suspected of having disabilities.
• Ensure compliance with timelines, processes, documentation, and student record requirements per district policy and state law.
• Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, substance abuse) to maintain student safety and adhere to policies.
• Administer medication, first aid, or health care as required for student treatment or medical monitoring.
• Assist other personnel and participate in meetings (e.g., parent conferences, in-service training) as needed.
• Maintain prompt and regular attendance.

Requirements

• State of Oregon Teaching License with Special Education endorsement.
• Current First Aid Card.
• Teaching Credential for Special Education at the appropriate level of instruction and No Child Left Behind Highly Qualified status.
• First Aid/CPR certification and Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.
• Ability to work with all special education eligibilities (learning, communication, visual, physical, or severe disabilities).
• Knowledge of federal and state special education laws, age-appropriate teaching methods, and state curriculum frameworks.
• Physical ability to stand/walk for prolonged periods, lift/carry/transfer immobile students, perform physical interventions, and use fine motor skills.
• Strong communication skills under stressful conditions and ability to model appropriate school behavior.
• Experience or lived experience with culturally, linguistically, and racially diverse communities (preferred).

Pay

2026-2027 annual salary range: $53,165 – $110,484 (195-day contract). Initial placement on the salary schedule is based on education and contracted licensed experience. Eligible for a specialty stipend of $3,023 for the school year. Additional $2,000 stipend for certified multilingual proficiency in Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian, American Sign Language, or Russian (must pass a standardized proficiency test). Salary and stipends are prorated based on FTE and start/end dates.
