• Teaching Credential for Special Education appropriate level of instruction
• No Child Left Behind Highly Qualified status
• First aid/CPR certification
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance

Pay

2026-2027 Annual Salary Range: $26,582 – $55,242 (195/196 Day Contract). Salary and stipends will be prorated based on FTE and start/end dates of the position. Initial placement on the salary schedule is based on education and contracted licensed experience.

This position is eligible to receive a specialty stipend of $1,512 for the 2026-2027 School Year. As a licensed employee, you are eligible to receive a specialty stipend of $1,000 if certified multilingual in Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian, American Sign Language, or Russian (must pass a standardized proficiency test).

About the Role

The Special Education Teacher facilitates student success in the least restrictive environment by addressing academic, interpersonal/social, self-management, and daily living skills. The role ensures access to the general education curriculum and non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible while implementing district-approved curriculum and documenting student progress.

Responsibilities

• Instruct students with individualized special needs to develop academic, interpersonal, self-management, and daily living skills (e.g., toileting/hygiene) through a defined course of study
• Manage classroom and individual student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment
• Prepare teaching materials and reports (e.g., Individualized Education Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, progress reports)
• Assess students for eligibility into special education and evaluate social (behavioral, motor development, communication) and academic needs (developmental level, vocational abilities)
• Collaborate with school personnel and community agencies (e.g., social service agencies, caretakers) to develop and modify programs, plan curriculum, and maximize student outcomes
• Direct instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student aides to address individual student needs
• Adapt lessons to implement IEP goals and meet special needs of students
• Advise parents/legal guardians on student progress, expectations, and methods for improvement
• Facilitate special education meetings for students with or suspected of having disabilities
• Ensure compliance with timelines, processes, documentation, and student record requirements per district policy and state law
• Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety and adhere to policies
• Ensure student confidentiality in verbal, written, electronic, and filing/organizational strategies
• Maintain prompt and regular attendance

Other Duties

• Administer medication, first aid, and/or health care as required
• Assist other personnel to support completion of work activities
• Participate in meetings (e.g., parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings) to receive/provide information and meet credential requirements

Skills & Requirements

• Knowledge of current federal and state laws pertaining to special education
• Skills to motivate students, communicate with diverse backgrounds, direct support personnel, and evaluate performance
• Ability to work with all special education eligibilities (learning, severe, communication, visually/physically handicapped) and apply age-appropriate teaching methods
• Ability to stand/walk for prolonged periods, organize/facilitate meetings, maintain records, and meet deadlines
• Effective communication under stressful conditions and modeling appropriate school behavior
• Physical abilities: lifting/carrying/transferring immobile students, physical interventions, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing, near/far visual acuity, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision
