Pay

2026-2027 Annual Salary Range: $53,165 - $110,484 (195/196 Day Contract). Initial placement on the salary schedule is based on education and contracted licensed experience.

This position is eligible to receive a specialty stipend of $3,023 for the 2026-2027 School Year.

As a licensed employee, you are eligible to receive a specialty stipend of $2,000 if certified Multilingual in Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian, American Sign Language, or Russian. Must pass a standardized proficiency test.

About the Role

The job of "Teacher - Special Education" facilitates student success in the least restrictive environment in academics, interpersonal/social skills, self-management, and activities of daily living through implementing district-approved curriculum, documenting progress, addressing specific student needs, and ensuring access to general education curriculum and non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible.

Responsibilities

• Instruct students with individualized special needs to develop appropriate academic, interpersonal, self-management, and daily living skills (e.g., toileting/hygiene) through a defined course of study
• Manage classroom and individual student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment
• Prepare teaching materials and reports (e.g., Individualized Education Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, progress reports)
• Assess students for eligibility into special education and evaluate their social (behavioral, motor development, communication) and academic needs (developmental level, vocational abilities)
• Collaborate with school personnel and community agencies (e.g., social service agencies, caretakers) to develop and modify programs, plan curriculum, and maximize student outcomes
• Direct instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student aides to address individual student needs
• Adapt lessons to implement IEP goals and meet the special needs of students
• Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, expectations, and methods for improvement
• Facilitate special education meetings for students with or suspected of having disabilities
• Ensure compliance with required timelines, processes, documentation, and student record requirements per district policy and state law
• Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety and adhere to policies
• Administer medication, first aid, and/or health care as required
• Assist other personnel and participate in meetings (e.g., parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings)
• Maintain prompt and regular attendance

Requirements

• Knowledge of current federal and state laws pertaining to special education
• Skills to motivate students, communicate with diverse backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance, and address student health care needs
• Ability to work with all special education eligibilities (learning, severely, communication, visually and/or physically handicapped) and use age-appropriate teaching methods
• Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform specialized tasks, maintain records, and meet deadlines
• Ability to communicate effectively under stressful conditions and model appropriate school behavior
• Significant physical abilities including lifting/carrying/transferring immobile students, physical interventions, stooping/crouching, and visual/hearing acuity
• Teaching Credential for Special Education at the appropriate level of instruction and No Child Left Behind Highly Qualified status
• First aid/CPR certification and Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
