About the Role

The Teacher for Students Identified as Deaf or Hard of Hearing establishes goal-oriented teaching strategies based on proven instructional techniques to benefit students with disabilities. This role uses various methods of communication to receive and convey language and adheres to LCSD Professional Standards for Licensed Employees.

Responsibilities

  • Follow mandated compliance standards established by Federal, State, or District regulations.
  • Utilize District curriculum guides, standardized tests, and special education teacher-prepared criterion-referenced test results to meet individual student needs.
  • Evaluate and modify goals and plans as necessary.
  • Assist general education teachers in planning curriculum, lesson preparation, and modification of instructional materials.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of IEP goals and objectives.
  • Confer with parents, administrators, school psychologists, itinerant staff, and general/resource teachers to develop IEPs.
  • Instruct students in academic subjects using gestures, manual sign systems, finger spelling, and speech cues.
  • Encourage student participation through their preferred mode of communication to ensure comprehension.
  • Promote the development of social skills and communication in daily living situations.
  • Test students' hearing aids for functionality.
  • Provide timely feedback to students on performance and improvement strategies.
  • Guide learning toward IEP goal achievement by establishing clear objectives.
  • Develop and utilize data on student needs and progress, reporting to parents as required.
  • Leverage individual student interests and aptitudes to promote learning.
  • Use encouragement and positive reinforcement as motivational tools.
  • Establish clear behavioral limits and consequences, deferring to individual behavior plans when necessary.
  • Promote self-discipline and responsibility through appropriate responses.
  • Help students improve self-image by focusing on strengths and discouraging focus on weaknesses.
  • Carry out clerical duties such as attendance, budgeting, and recording grades accurately.
  • Organize and conduct eligibility determinations per Nevada Administrative Code for Deaf or Hard of Hearing students.
  • Offer and seek assistance from colleagues, specialists, and supervisors.
  • Maintain appropriate student records and submit required reports in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations regarding confidential special education documents.
  • Uphold school rules, administrative regulations, and board policies.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student, parent, and staff information.
  • Exhibit a cooperative attitude and willingness to work with administrators.
  • Schedule DHH staff based on student needs and staff availability.
  • Direct the work of interpreters and provide interpreting when necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Nevada teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education, certified in the relevant subject area.
  • Preferred experience working in special education, specifically with students identified as deaf or hard of hearing.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use keyboard and video display terminals for prolonged periods.
  • Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, and stand for long periods.
  • Dexterity and coordination to handle files, paper, and occasional lifting of materials (up to 25 pounds).
  • Reaching for items above and below waist and head level, including bending, squatting, and stooping.
  • Manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate educational technology (e.g., LCD projectors, SmartBoards, tablets).
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to climate-controlled classroom settings and outdoor weather conditions.
  • Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud.
  • Work in crowded environments.
  • Potential hazards include classroom furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, and chemicals.
