About the role

Prompts the development, implementation, and monitoring of individualized education programs for students with hearing impairments. Collaborates with general educators to ensure continuity of services.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct instructional services based on IEPs
  • Develops, adapts, modifies, and individualizes educational materials
  • Maintains appropriate records and documents progress
  • Evaluates student achievement and modifies instructional activities
  • Serves as a member of the school IEP team
  • Works with parents to ensure ongoing communication and instructional support
  • Collaborates with other professionals to maximize learning opportunities
  • Assigns work to and oversees aides and volunteers
  • Maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning
  • Supports or participates in school-wide activities and events
  • Maintains student behavior in non-instructional areas
  • Supports or participates in the use and maintenance of assistive technology
  • Trains staff and students in the use of hearing aids, devices, and equipment
  • Trains staff and students in sign communication
  • Trains staff and students in specific conditions, etiologies, and implications for instruction
  • Trains staff and IEP teams on appropriate supplementary aids and services and IEP accommodations and modifications

Requirements

Master's Degree or equivalent in education or closely related field. Valid Maryland State Department of Education Standard Professional License in Special Education; Non-Maryland applicants should possess equivalent educator professional license. Valid license for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Qualifications

  • Fluency with aural rehabilitation
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local mandates as related to the IEP team process
  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, equipment, and instructional strategies for students with hearing impairments
  • Knowledge of child growth and development
  • Knowledge of school's program of studies related to assignments and mission, goals, and organization
  • Ability to select instructional planning, management, and evaluation procedures that relate to student needs and the demands of the instructional environment
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of assigned students with hearing impairments
