About the role

Under the general supervision of the special education teacher, the special education teacher assistant supports the implementation of student IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) by assisting the teacher in five areas of service: instructional support, management and supervision support, personal support, assessment support, and material management.

Schedule

3.9 hours per day / 174 days per year

Pay

Salary Grade 8 - $22.03 per hour (Support Salary Table 2026-2027). Promotions result in a minimum 5% increase.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional support to students as outlined in their IEPs
  • Assist with management and supervision of students
  • Provide personal support, including lifting, feeding programs, and simple sign/signal communication
  • Assist with medical procedures such as gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, and diapering of adult-size students
  • Support assessment activities
  • Manage instructional materials

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education and/or experience
  • District in-service training (required after hiring)
  • Basic knowledge of academic subjects
  • Substitution or equivalent experience preferred
  • Skills required depend on assignment, student needs, IEP, and established procedures of the supervising professional
  • For Title One schools: equivalent of two years (48 semester hours) full-time education at an institution of higher education, or an associate's degree, or ability to pass a Utah State Office of Education approved Para-Professional Test
