About the role
The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) collects revenue that supports essential public services, administering sales and use tax and special taxes and fees, accounting for about twenty‑three percent of state revenue. The Tax Technician III – Lead works under the general direction of the Business Taxes Administrator, serving as an experienced resource and performing the most difficult and complex technical duties.
Responsibilities
- Issue permits to businesses
- Handle the full range of account maintenance duties
- Conduct taxpayer interviews
- Issue use tax exemption certificates
- Process escrow clearances for business sales
- Handle incoming and released security
- Perform reception duties
- Oversee public counter operation, ensuring timely and orderly processing, adjusting coverage daily, and providing training
- Travel up to five percent of the time for training purposes
Requirements
- Participate in E‑Verify; provide Form I‑9 information to confirm work authorization
- Successfully complete fingerprinting and background investigation
- May be required to undertake overnight travel for up to five consecutive nights for training

Pay
$4,246.00 – $5,319.00 per month (minimum salary for new‑to‑State candidates)
Schedule
Permanent, full‑time position. Primary work location is Fresno County, in‑office. Under Government Code 14200, the role may be eligible for partial telework for qualified California residents, with hybrid schedules requiring a minimum number of office days per week (subject to change).
